    Nutrition in Adolescents

    random sample of European adolescents (boys and
    girls aged 13 16 years) on relevant nutrition
    and health-related parametres, e.g. dietary
    intake, food choices and preferences
  • to assess dietary and physical activity patterns
    as well as nutritional status among European
    adolescents

    indicators of nutritional status
  • 3,000 adolescents, recruited in 10 cities from 9

    cardiovascular risk factors, micronutrient status
    and immunological indicators of malnutrition

    nationally representative samples of Portuguese
    households from 1990 2000

  • to identify time trends and socio-demographic
    disparaties in Portuguese food habits and to
    compare Portguese food habits to those of other
    European countries

  • data collected through Portugese Household
    Budget Survey (HBS) of 1989/ 1990, 1994/ 1995 and
    2000/ 2001 were analysed
  • HBS derived information can also be used for
    nutritional purposes as it allows quantification
    of availability of foods and beverages in a
    nationally representative sample of households
    and by socio-demographic groupings
  • socio-demographic disparaties in food
    availability can still be identified in most
    recent 2000 data

  • household availability generally decreased from
    1990 2000
  • Portuguese among the highest consumers of
    cereals, pulses, fruits, potatoes, fish and
    seafood, fats, oils and alcoholic beverages but
    also of meat and meat products
  • on the contrary Portuguese were among lowest
    consumers of vegetables, milk and milk products,
    eggs, sugar and sugar products, fruit and
    vegetable juices, soft drinks and stimulants
