Kelly Schultz
  • Sports Broadcaster

Who is Kelly Schultz Part 1
  • There were two things I was passionate about
during my childhood sports and sewing. I knew at
a young age that I wanted to do one or the other
when I grew up, but deciding which one I wanted
to do was the hard part.
  • After graduating from Hill Murray High School in
Maplewood, Minnesota, I attended the University
of Minnesota. I decided to take a shot at the
fashion design industry. I completed several
introductory classes in design, but never really
felt like I fit in to the "fashion crowd." So I
changed my mind and started taking classes
focused on journalism. I thought that the fashion
industry would be easier to enter because it was
a more "female" focused business, unlike the
sports industry of the 1990s which was
    predominantly run by men.
  • Needless to say, I ended up frustrated with the
size of my classes and the lack of personal
guidance at the U of M, and went back to working
in retail. Two years later I found myself in
front of an advisor at Brown Institute in
Minneapolis (now known as Brown College). It was
there that I finally realized I could follow my
dream of being a sports broadcaster. I got my
first job working in radio at WMIN in Hudson,
Wisconsin as the board operator for Nebraska
Cornhusker football every Saturday afternoon and
    a Bowl game that season.

Who is Kelly Schultz Part 2
  • Despite not finishing my college degree, I
continued to move up in the broadcast industry. I
did everything from running the control board to
producing a network sports show to doing sideline
reporting for football to hosting game
broadcasts. It wasn't until I landed in Bemidji,
Minnesota that I realized how important getting
my college degree would be to my future in this
competitive industry. And what was even better
was that Bemidji State University was a smaller
university of around 5,000 students rather than
the 65,000 I encountered in the Twin Cities.
  • With over ten years of experience in radio and
television broadcasting already on my resume, I
decided it would be in my best interest to
concentrate on something other than mass
communications. I returned to college at Bemidji
State University in January 2007 and will be
graduating with my Bachelor of Arts in Sport
    Management in May 2009.

Kellys Philosophy
  • I am passionate about my career in sports
broadcasting. Sports have been and always will be
an important part of my life.
  • I will always stay true to who I am despite
criticism and take advice from those that matter,
    my mentors and superiors.
  • I believe that in the business of sports
broadcasting, it is most important to deliver
only the truth and to seek out the truth when
    reporting breaking news.
  • I will only use credible sources and remain
professional in my relationships with the
athletes and coaches I am covering.
  • Journalism is a powerful tool that requires those
involved in it to adhere to a code of ethics.
Ethics is extremely important to me.
  • I believe that people should be treated fairly no
matter what their background. I will treat my
subjects with objectivity when I report about
    them.
  • Because of my education and extensive life
experiences, I am able to work within all aspects
of the media. Play-by-play, reporting, editing,
producing, Web writing, blogging, and creative
    writing are my strong points.
