Title: LR-WPAN Standards Work

1
LR-WPAN Standards Work
IEEE 802.15 Task Groups 4a and 4b
  • Marco Naeve and Jose A. Gutierrez
  • Eaton - Innovation Center

2
IEEE 802.15.4a - Scope
  • Develop an alternate physical layer (PHY) for
    data communication with precision ranging,
extended range, enhanced robustness and mobility.
The alternate PHY is an (optional) amendment to
the current IEEE 802.15.4-2003 LR-WPAN standard.

3
IEEE 802.15.4a - Status
  • Reviewed proposals of potential applications.
  • Developed UWB channel model.
  • Drafted technical requirements document.
  • Reviewed preliminary proposals for solutions.
  • Drafted selection criteria document.
  • The expected completion date of the TG4a
    amendment is November of 2006.

4
IEEE 802.15.4 - Scope
  • Resolve ambiguities, provide corrections,
    removing unnecessary complexity, and define
enhancements to the current IEEE 802.15.4-2003
standard. The revised standard will be backward
    compatible.
  • The considered enhancements are limited to
  • A method for shared time-base distribution.
  • Extension of 2.4GHz derivative modulation
yielding higher data rates for the lower
    frequency bands.
  • Mechanism for communicating the revision level.
  • Security enhancements.

5
IEEE 802.15.4b - Status
  • Reviewed comments from various implementers of
    the IEEE 802.15.4-2003 standard.
  • Selected baseline proposals.
  • Currently drafting a revision document.
  • The expected completion date of the TG4b
    revision is January of 2006.
