Group Goals
  • Goal 1
  • To develop and implement a daily half-hour
    intervention/enhancement period in the Paulding
    Elementary Building.

  • Students with academic skills that are below
    grade level will have an opportunity for
    interventions that help develop weak skills.
  • Students with academic skills that are at or
    above grade level will have an opportunity to
    further enhance their skills.

Intervention Periods
  • The PEERS group worked with grade level teachers
    to determine time blocks for intervention
    periods.
  • Each grade level selected a time block for
    intervention.

Intervention Process
  • Grade Levels selected various strategies to
    deliver interventions. These included
  • Teacher providing interventions to own class.
  • Students moving between classrooms to receive
    intervention at specific ability level.
  • Teachers moving among classrooms to provide
    interventions.

Need for Intervention
  • The need for intervention will be matched to
    particular students through the assessments
    already used in the Paulding Elementary building.
  • Assessments include DIBELS, STAR Reading, STAR
    Math.

DIBELS
  • The use of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early
    Literacy Skills (DIBELS) was introduced during
    the 2004-05 school year in grades K -3.
  • DIBELS is used at Paulding Elementary to identify
    students who are at risk of reading failure.

  • The use of DIBELS in grades 4 5 was introduced
    for the 2005-06 school year.

in-service.

Intervention Assistance Team
  • Paulding Elementary has an existing Intervention
    Assistance Team (IAT). The IAT will additionally
    be used to identify needed interventions for
    individual students. These interventions can be
    implemented during the Intervention Period.

Existing Intervention Materials
  • Read Well is a structured phonics program that
    was introduced at Paulding Elementary during
    2004-05.
  • Read Well provide small group instruction at
    ability level in grades K-2.
  • Read Well will continued to be used by grades K-2
    during the 2005-06 school year for intervention.

New Materials
  • A major focus of the PEERS group was to research
    and select intervention materials to use for use
    in grades 3 through 5.

  • Goals in material selection include
  • Ability to individualize for student needs.
  • Ability to provide for ongoing assessment.
  • Ability to provide for consistency in
    interventions.

Grant Funds
  • Paulding Elementary received the Ohio Adolescent
    Reading Grant for the 2005-06 school year. Funds
    from this grant were available to purchase
    intervention materials for grades 4 and 5.

    programs and materials for use during the
    intervention period.

Materials Selected
  • Reading Games
  • A series of reading games was selected. These
    games reinforce skills such as main ideas, cause
    and effect, and making inferences. The use of
    such games will help develop skills and help
    support classroom management.

  • This is a program of leveled readers and
    accompanying activities. Materials are
    down-loaded from a subscription site on the
    internet.

    for the intervention period.
  • Reading A-Z will additionally be the primary
    program used in the after-school tutoring
    programs.

  • Rocket Math is a self-paced program that helps
    students develop fluency with basic math facts.
  • Rocket Math will be used in grades 3 5.

  • The PEERS group held an in-service presentation
    to introduce teachers to the intervention process
    and the available materials.

  • The PEERS group worked to develop a process to

    students.

Volunteers
  • In order to provide interventions in small group
    settings, the PEERS group organized an effort to
    recruit both high school and adult volunteers.

for the use of volunteers in the Intervention
Program.
