  • Background
  • Successive reviews of undergraduate medical
curriculae have recommended inclusion of general
practice. This was introduced as a module to the
UCC course in 1998. Objectives for this module
were written, initially, in terms of what would
be covered in the lectures and what GPs would
teach to students sent to them on clinical
attachment. Review of these objectives has noted
them to be too numerous, too teacher centred and
too ambitious. Review has highlighted the need
to focus on those learning opportunities for
    students specific to general practice.
  • Learning Opportunities Specific to GP
  • knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to deal
    with patients attending with undifferentiated
    health problems
  • the appreciation and understanding of the
diverse aspects of providing continuing care
provided to patients with multiple and chronic
    health problems
  • communicating with patients in ways that allow
the healthcare professional to understand medical
problems and their management from the
perspective of the patient and help the patient
understand their health problems from a medical
    perspective

Revised learning outcomes for General Practice
module Undifferentiated medical problems Upon
completion of the general practice module
students should be able to identify
undifferentiated medical problems presented by
patients. They should be able to generate a
reasonable range of diagnostic possibilities and
be able to explain and justify the rationale
leading to their consideration. They should be
able to investigate these diagnostic
possibilities by means of appropriately focused
history taking and by selective physical
examination. They should be able to construct a
management plan for the management of the
patients problem(s) which should include
provision for patient safety in the event of the
initial diagnostic conclusion proving erroneous.
They should also be able to explain and negotiate
their management plan with the patient. Multiple
and long term health problems Upon completion of
the general practice module students should be
able to construct a general model for the safe
and effective management of patients with
multiple and long term health problems. This
model should encompass the physical,
psychological and social aspects of management of
the problem and include ascertainment of the
patients perspective. They should be able to
adapt and develop this model to the long term
health problems commonly encountered by doctors.
They should also be able to prioritise among
multiple medical interventions when these are in
conflict in the care of patients with multiple
health problems. They should also be able to
review their own clinical performance in the care
of patients with multiple and long term health
problems Communicating with patients Upon
completion of the general practice module
students should be able to establish and develop
a rapport with patients such that patients are at
ease in discussing their health problems and
their perspective on them. Students should be
able to gather appropriate information on the
patients health problem(s) including information
on the patients own perspective on the
problem(s). They should also be able to explain
the doctors perception of the nature of health
problem(s) and offer and negotiate an appropriate
plan of management with the patient.
