• The National Assessment of Educational Progress
  (NAEP) is the only nationally representative and
  continuing assessment of what America's students
  know and can do in various subject areas.
  Assessments are conducted periodically in
  mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts,
  civics, economics, geography, and U.S. history.
• NAEP assessments with state components are
  mathematics, reading, science, and writing for
  grades 4 and 8.
• In the state assessment, a sample of schools and
  students is selected to represent a participating
  state.

Conclusion

• Although the data shows some growth over time,
  continued improvement of reading and writing
  skills for ALL students should remain a priority.
• The achievement gap between ethnic groups remains
  a concern at both the state an national level.
• Poverty and parent involvement does have an
  impact on student achievement and needs to be
  addressed.
• Teachers need the best research-based strategies
  available to be prepared to meet daily
  challenges.
• Formative assessments are a crucial part of
  classroom learning.
