How It All Began

• Rosa Parks had spent her day working and sat down
  in the middle section of the public bus she took
  home.
• As the route continued one white person had to
  stand and the bus driver told her to move to the
  back of the bus.
• She was fined 10 and had to pay 4 in court costs

Impact

• Against the wishes of her family she stood up and
  became the face of the start of the Civil Rights
  Movement
• Because of her case more than 40,000 people
  stayed off the buses for 381 days
• People began using African American owned cab
  companies until the decision of Browder v. Gayle
  was handed down.

Emergence of Martin Luther King

• Following the bus boycott Martin Luther King
  emerged as the leader of the Civil Rights
  Movement
• King had to take the momentum of the boycott and
  translate that into a national movement
• He did that with the formation of the Southern
  Christian Leadership Conference and the motto
  Not one hair on one head of one person should be
  harmed

Methods of Protest

• King always pushed for nonviolent resistance that
  he learned through Gandhi and was struck by
  Gandhis quote Through our strength we will make
  them see their injustice
• Another method that was used was sit-ins to
  protest inhumane treatment
• Following much success the Student Nonviolent
  Coordinating Committee was created (SNCC)
