What is Gestational Diabetes?
  • Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes
that some women get during pregnancy because
their body is not able to produce enough insulin
to keep blood sugar with in a range that is safe
for the women and her fetus. The high blood sugar
level is usually between the 24th and 28th weeks
    of pregnancy.

3
What causes Gestational Diabetes?
  • A fetus grows and develops the placenta. It
produces several important hormones. Some of
these hormones block the action of insulin,
requiring the mothers body too produce extra
insulin. If a women's body cannot produce enough
extra insulin to counteract her resistance to is,
    she develops Gestational Diabetes.

4
How Is it Diagnosed?
  • Almost all women are tested for Gestational
Diabetes between the 24th and 28th week of their
pregnancy. However, women with a high risk for
the disease are tested earlier in the pregnancy.
Women who meet all the criteria for a low risk do
not have to be tested at all.
