Title: Haiku

1
Haiku
  • One-breath poetry

2
  • Haiku is a style of Japanese poetry
  • In Japanese there are three parts to the poem.
The first part has five syllables, the second
part seven syllables, and the third part has five
syllables. However, this is not always the case
    when writing in English

3
  • Stars in the universe
  • the earth in the galaxy
  • and me in my home.

4
  • The damp forest floor
  • smelling of fresh pine needles
  • and old
    rotting logs.

5
In the cherry blossoms shade, there are
no complete strangers.

  • A haiku is concerned with a single happening that
is being described in the present tense
  • It is usually about two or more things we do not
usually think of together. Associating them
makes the reader experience an emotion.
  • Haiku is usually divided into three groups of
syllables (5-7-5). In English it doesnt always
come out that way. Try writing with 17 syllables
as they do in Japanese or about 10 to 12
syllables, as haiku in English are often written.

7
Beginning to write
  • Look out the window.
  • Write a few sentences about what you see. Not
what you feel or think, just what you see.
  • Now that you have written about what you see, go
back and take out all the words that dont add to
    the picture.
  • Get the description down to about 10 words
