Title: Local people should be more involved in deciding the priorities for action within their neighbourhoo

1
Local people should be more involved in deciding
the priorities for action within their
neighbourhoods and parishes, so say local
governments and other organisations. But how
are these bodies to know what the priorities
are? One of the main ways in Devon is through
community planning activities. Many towns and
parishes have already written, or are writing, a
parish or town plan. These plans are important
because the priorities they identify are based on
the views of local communities, gathered through
community events and questionnaires. There are
now over 100 active plans in existence, full of
valuable information. How can we make sure the
priorities are known about and shared? How can
the successes be shown? Through a Devon wide
Community Planning Database The following
presentation will give you a flavour of what the
database could look like. Remember most of
what you see can be changed so please feedback
any comments.

Recording reporting progress
16
What information will be collected about a
project?
  • Information will be gathered about 8 different
    areas.
  • Group/place description
  • Stage 1 Issues
  • Stage 2 Aims Objectives
  • Stage 3 Project proposal
  • Stage 4 Final Project
  • Stage 5 Evaluation
  • Contact details
  • Administrative areas
  • Organisations
  • LAA outcomes
  • Audit information
  • Administrator information

17
When writing or when a community have written a
plan, what can the they do with the Database?
  • They will be able to input your own information
about your projects, describe them in your own
way and allow others to see the good work you are
    doing.
  • They will be able to see how far your efforts
have got you and what the next steps should be.
  • They will be able to keep your information alive.
Rather than a dusty document on a shelf, it
becomes a living process that you can use to
attract more volunteers and agency support.
  • They can use it to produce update reports for
your parish or town council or anyone else that
    is interested!
  • They can use it to find out what other areas are
doing to get ideas and inspiration!
  • They can use it to find out what projects or
issues are around in neighbouring or nearby areas
maybe you could join up to fundraise and work
    together.

18
What will others be able to do with the Database?
  • Those that do not normally look at community-led
plans, can do it much easier.
  • They will be able to produce reports to look
across a geographical area to see how active the
    community groups are.
  • They will be able to see which partners are more
    active in supporting community projects.
  • They will be able to proactively manage funds to
direct them where it is needed most.
  • They will be able to use the information to
inform strategic priorities for service delivery.
  • They will be able to use it to support projects
and keep up to date easier and more effectively.
  • They will be able to use the level of activity
and success to justify support for the
    community-led planning process.

19
How will I know how to put information into the
Database?
  • The Database will be designed so its easy to use
and has a simple interface. It will be structured
    as below.

But it never works out that you get it right 1st
time. After conversations with other groups and
organisations, you may find that the project
changes and solves not just one problem, but
many.
Then once you have thought about the measures
that will solve your problem, you can put your
project proposals in.
Then you can put in the aspirations and positive
statements of purpose.
First you can put in information about the
results you get back from any consultations or
engagement activities.

But you may need some extra support
  • So we will take the following action to directly
    support you
  • A support network of community development
practitioners will provide ongoing help advice
    (details next slide)
  • Training will be provided through online
guidance and train the trainer for the support
network to ensure consistent application of the
    database
  • An offline version that can be used at meetings
to record the information for upload at a later
    date

21
Proposed network for supporting the database
All of these individuals and organisations have
agreed to promote the use of the database,
respond to queries from communities and where
necessary aid the communities in entering
information. They will do this by supporting
one another, making most efficient use of contact
and dialogue with the communities that already
exists. 3 district areas have yet to agree to
formally support the database the database will
operate fully in the 4 districts mentioned.
