Constellation Program

• NASA intends to prepare an Environmental Impact
  Statement (EIS) for the implementation of the
  Constellation Program. The Constellation Program
  encompasses NASAs initial efforts to extend the
  human presence throughout the Solar System as the
  President outlined in his Vision for Space
  Exploration.

Constellation Program

• Major elements of the Constellation Program are
  currently focused on providing the capability to
  transport humans and cargo to the moon, in
  support of lunar exploration missions, and to the
  International Space Station (ISS), while future
  efforts would support missions to Mars and
  beyond.

Constellation Program

• The Constellation Programmatic EIS will be
  developed in accordance with the National
  Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and will discuss
  the purpose and need for the development of
  systems needed to support these missions.

Constellation Program

• The proposed framework for implementation of the
  Constellation Program has been established
  through studies addressed in NASAs Exploration
  Systems Architecture Study (ESAS) released in
  November of 2005.

Constellation Program

• The ESAS identified the key technologies required
  to enable NASA to continue to support the ISS, to
  undertake human exploration missions to the moon,
  and to prepare for human missions to Mars and
  ultimately to other destinations in the Solar
  System.

Constellation Program

• The Programmatic EIS will include a high-level
  discussion of the systems identified as necessary
  to meet the goals established by the President.

Constellation Program

• NASA has issued a Notice Of Intent and is seeking
  public input and comment on which environmental
  issues and concerns should be considered and
  focused on in the Programmatic EIS, and any
  additional alternatives that should be
  considered. Interested parties are invited to
  submit their comments on or before November 13,
  2006.
