FORMATION
  • Since the late 1960s, there has been armed
conflict, in Northern Ireland, between the Roman
Catholics (Republicans / Nationalists), who want
Northern Ireland to become part of the Republic
of Ireland, and the Protestants (Loyalists /
Unionists), who want Northern Ireland to remain
    part of the U.K.
  • This conflict revived the Irish Republican Army
(IRA), which was originally formed in 1919.
  • In 1969, the IRA slit into two groups
  • The Provisional IRA
  • Went on to become the largest and most powerful
    of the Republican groups

FROMATION cont
  • Official IRA
  • Less ideologically committed to armed struggle
  • Leaders were leftists with Marxist ideology
  • The leaders believed that Protestant and Catholic
    working-class could overcome sectarian interests.
  • More open to political solutions and
    intercommunity dialogue
  • In 1972, the Official IRA declared a cease-fire,
hoping to change their military strength into
    open political power.
  • On December 8, 1974, a small group of Official
IRA members were upset with the cease-fire, so
they split off and formed their own group, the
    Irish National Liberation Army (INLA).

  • In 1975, a feud erupted between the INLA and the
IRA, after the IRA was upset with the departure
    from their group.
  • The first death committed by the INLA was an
Official IRA leader, Paul Crawford, in April
    1975.
  • That same year, they INLA also killed Billy
McMillan, who was a leading Official republican
    in Belfast.
  • Throughout the entire year, and the years to
follow, the INLA would be involved in several
more feuds with other paramilitary forces and
    within the group itself.

    Airey Neave

assassinated Billy King Rat Wright, leader of
the Loyalist Volunteer Force, in the courtyard of
    the Maze Prison.

8
CEASE-FIRE
  • On August 22, 1998, following the Omagh bombing
by splinter group the Real IRA, the INLA declared
    a cease-fire.
  • Government security forces believe that the INLA
and the Real IRA provided mutual aid but the INLA
provided the vehicles for the bombing.
  • The INLA is thought to be responsible for 125
150 deaths throughout the groups existence.
  • The INLA has not disarmed and claims they retain
the right to engage in armed campaigns.
