DISCIPLINE
(1) WHAT IS IT? (definition) (2) WHAT DOES IT
LOOK LIKE IN YOUR FAMILY, YOUR SCHOOL,INSTITUTION,
YOUR CITY? (3)WHAT IF THERE WERE NO DISCIPLINE?
WHAT WOULD YOUR FAMILY, SCHOOL, INSTITUTION,
CITY LOOK LIKE?

DISCIPLINE IN THE FOUNDATIONAL PERIOD
  • FROM PUNISHMENT TO CORRECTION
  • Moving toward DISCIPLESHIP

4
Of the beginning we read...
5
For the untrained and inexperienced, punishment
exercised in passion is the method used for
discipline.
School methods of discipline often reflect the
values and methods of a society. These
frequently resort to methods of hurting the other
(punishment) in the quest of control.
V
6
Discipline is very necessary, especially in
schools attended mostly by the children of the
lower classes. It holds the rebellious in check,
incites the slothful, masters the defiant,
overawes the disorderly, curbs the playful and
inattentive. It is required to bridle the
insubordination of youngsters who lack a proper
upbringing It is difficult to understand that
these young teachers brash and hotheaded, even
though fervent and sincerely pious, untrained and
unprepared to keep class in order and silence
soon made mistakes which led to more disorder and
trouble. When some of the teachers lost their
prestige by such faults, the troublemakers among
the students defied them and paid no more
attention to their punishments than to their
lessons BLAIN

It is in the context of the students real world

De La Salle and Corrections
20
Correction of the students is one of the most
important things to be done in the schools. The
greatest care must be taken in order that it may
be timely and beneficial both for those who
receive it and for those who witness it.
Conduct, p. 135
21
QUALITIES OF CORRECTION
In order to be beneficial TO THE STUDENTS...
  • On the part of the TEACHER
  • pure and disinterested
  • charitable
  • just
  • proportioned to the fault
  • moderate
  • prudent
  • On the part of BOTH TEACHER AND STUDENT
  • peaceable
  • silent
  • On the part of the STUDENT
  • be willingly accepted
  • must be respectful

22
  • Ingrained cultural beliefs
  • Human nature is spontaneously inclined to evil.
  • Children are especially vulnerable on this point,
for it is innate in them. They are weak, easily
    influenced and lack reason.
  • In their reprehensible behavior, they are victims
of the omnipresent devil who is particularly
    active in their regard.
  • Actions worthy of blame are assimilated to sins.
  • Correction must basically wipe evil out by the
root. It possesses an expiatory role and should
    bring about conversion.

23
Correction Punishment
In the old dictionaries Le Grand Vocabularie
Français says it is the power and authority to
scold and to give punishment. (fasting and
the whip are listed among the lighter
punishments that can be administered. In the
bible dictionary châtiment notes three
realities underlying punishment sin, anger,
judgment. Means used for physical punishment
Fasting, the birch, the whip, the dungeon. In De
La Salles Schools, the ferule was also used.
Physical punishment was the school penalty.

As the Wise man says, God chastises his children
whom he loves tenderly MF 177.2
If a school is to be well-regulated and in very
good order, correction must be rare. Conduct p.

TRIPLE REFLECTION OF DE LA SALLE
PROFESSIONAL The teacher must abide by a
certain number of conditions for correction to
bear fruit and never lose his self-control in
this domain. One must not try to correct in
order to endeavor to restore ones compromised
personal authority, but rather to ask oneself
which circumstances made the correction
necessary. It is evident THAT THE TEACHER IS TO
BLAME when he corrects frequently, this in turn
justifies the limitations imposed o the right to
correct age, frequency, severity, the need to
ask first for the required permission. (Articles
2,3,4 and 6 of chapter on corrections) THE
STUDENT Which children need correction and
which do not CE correction Article 5 Essay on
character typology leads the teacher to question
himself on fairness and efficacy. The aim is not
instant repression but interior change in the
person of the pupil and his behavior.
26
PASTORAL MTR 11 and 12. The aim and
justification for any correction lies in the
conversion of the student. Its main effect must
be spiritual, even though its publicly announced
aims are dissuasion and setting an example.
General Chapter 1787 Since the edition of
the Conduct is now out of print, we order that
before it is reprinted, the pages regarding
punitive corrections which have been forbidden by
this Chapter, considering the drawbacks of this
type of correction, be removed from the text. The
Brothers Director will see to it that schools are
managed for the sake of good order and
instruction in accordance with this.

The gift of GENTLENESS...

of the Conduct of Christian Schools
...This will be done after the necessity of
joining GENTLENESS to firmness in the guidance of
children have been explained.
