2
Introduction
  • The project intends to adapt, extend and apply an
existing tool oriented to astronomical problems.
  • effective and intuitive way of visualisation
    analysis
  • advanced visualization techniques Stereography
    and Virtual Reality.
  • large amount of data produced by numerical
    simulations and observational surveys.
  • This project is for
  • Professional (researchers)
  • Non specialists (general science dissemination
    and school education)
  • The project is
  • a Trial
  • 2 years long 3 months extension (from sep 2001
    to nov 2003)
  • A collaboration has been established with
another EC funded project, ESTEDI, dealing with
the application of multi-dimensional databases in
    astrophysics

3
Scientific areas of interest
  • Cosmological simulations
  • aim to include a set of quantitative analysis
tools for data coming from simulations.
  • Galaxy catalogues
  • aim to include in the tool the possibility to
manage galaxy and stars catalog . The tool should
also provide the means to give stereoscopic views
of the universe to a larger public
  • Radio-data
  • aim to provide data inspection tools for the
data of the Westerbork Radio Synthesis Telescope.
  • Education
  • aim to adapt the tool to science dissemination
    and education

Activities carried out
  • Porting to VTK4.1 started in January 2003 and
was concluded in April 2003 with not many
significant problems reported by the partners.
  • Now we follow the VTK distributions as far as
    possible.
  • More functionalities added by all the partners
    (WP4 to WP7)
  • Version 2.0 produced and distributed on the web
. Containing all features developed by partners
    (except Astron).
  • Version 2.1 consolidation of the version -
closing bugs and enhancing the installation
    procedures .
  • Version 3.0. final AstroMD release, conteins
    features from ASTRON
  • Other testing and Validation activities.
  • Measurements on cosmological simulation
    features
  • Production of lessons
  • AstroMD Guides updated
  • Dissemination activities, AstroMD User Group.

WP2 dissemination
  • WP2 Dissemination
  • WP leader IRAStatus completed
  • Deliverables due D2 at pm27
  • WP aim aim of this Workpackage is to ensure
exploitability of the project outcomes beyond the
project to create awareness among the scientific
community to contribute to published scientific
state of art to contribute with a new technology
tool to teaching activity in primary and
    secondary schools.
  • Activities
  • -          Participation to several meetings,
both on IT topics and Astronomy.
  • -          Organisation of the Second User Group
    meeting
  • -          Involvement with teachers and
    students.

? Hans De Ruiter

WP4 cosmological simulations
  • WP4 Cosmological simulations
  • WP leader OACT
  • Status completed.
  • Deliverables due D4b at month 22
  • WP aim the aim of this work-package is to
provide the astronomical community with a tool to
analyze data coming from numerical simulations,
base both on particles and on mesh data.
  • Activities
  • special functions for the HDF5 reader for
    cosmological simulation data

? Ugo Becciani
11
WP5 galaxy catalogues
  • WP5 Galaxy catalogues
  • WP leader IASF-MI Status completed
  • Deliverables due D5b at month 22
  • WP aim to provide the astronomical community
with a tool allowing to plot any three variables
in a galaxy catalogue (i.e., right ascension,
    declination, distance two colours and
    magnitude), thus visualizing the interesting
parameters on which to make selections for
further analysis. The tool will also provide the
means to give stereoscopic views of the universe
    to a larger public.
  • Activities
  • installation procedures finalized,
    functionalities debugged and tested, working
    examples supplied,

? Luigi Paioro

WP6 radio data
  • WP leader ASTRON
  • Status completed
  • Deliverables due D6b
  • WP aim to provide data inspection tools for the
visibility data of the Westerbork Radio Synthesis
    Telescope.
  • Activities
  • Reader of FITS files (to import 3D-dataset
    written in ImageFits format).

? Nico Vermaas
13
WP7 galaxy catalogues
? Hans De Ruiter
  • WP leader IRA
  • Status completed
  • Deliverables due D7b
  • WP aim to specialize AstroMD for
    educational applications.
  • Activities
  • celestial coordinates. (Cartesian system
reference, is not intuitive when showing real
    astronomic objects).
  • Grates of spherical coordinates representing
    "right ascension" and "declination
  • "Spherical selector" (to select objects inside a
    3D space).
  • Semi-interactive lessons as a driven sequence of
steps equipped by texts and images.

14
WP8 testing and validation

  • Deliverables due
  • D8a software pilot AstroMD rel.3.0
  • D8b User Guide AstroMD rel.3.0
  • D8c Installation Guide AstroMD rel.3.0 (new
    deliverable)
  • WP aim integrate all the functionalities in
WP4-7, and to test the tool using data coming
from numerical simulations and from observational
    catalogues.
  • Activities
  • VTK library porting ? AstroMD 2.0.
  • Bug fixing, stability, installation procedures ?
