Objectives
  • In this lesson I want students to do research
about the battles that occurred at Fort
Ticonderoga and have them develop a better
    understanding of Champlain Valley History.
  • Students will be using Microsoft Publisher to
create newspaper articles based on their research
of the battles that occurred at Fort Ticonderoga.
Within publisher, students will develop an
understanding of how to type text in the program
in addition to successfully inserting pictures
that pertain to the topic. Students will then
print their articles to a Color Laser Jet printer
and compile an entire newspaper on the battle. I
will then make copies of the finished piece and
    distribute.

3
Introduction Learning Activity
  • I would start by explaining to students that this
is the beginning of a unit that will end with a
field trip to Fort Ticonderoga. In this lesson,
students will be provided with why it is
important to study local history and the impact
    it has on them.

4
Provide Information
  • I want students to work individually on this
lesson. We will go to the computer lab and every
student will pick a topic that falls under the
category of Fort Ticonderoga. This could be
anything from battles that occurred, important
people, or anything that interest them about this
time. Students will be working on this project
    for approximately a week.
  • Monday will be an introduction to the unit and I
will take the students to the computer lab and
start teaching the basics of web searching and
    how to use Microsoft Publisher.

5
Provide Information (cont)
  • On Tuesday and Wednesday, students will continue
to research their topics and start creating their
newspaper article. Thursday students should have
their research complete, and be working on their
    newspaper articles.
  • Thursday students should have their research
complete, and be working on their newspaper
articles. On Friday students will be making final
touches to their articles, printing them and
handing into the teacher. On the following
Monday, the teacher will compile the newspaper
articles and make copies for distribution to the
    class.

6
Provide Information (cont)
  • On Tuesday, students will set up a 5 minute
meeting with me to go over their work. This where
I will evaluate their performance and suggest
areas of improvement and areas that were well
done. On Wednesday, students will take a field
trip to Fort Ticonderoga and be able to apply
their research with real reenactments, and get a
    tour of the Fort.

7
Provide Practice
  • I have already built in practice for this lesson.
The first day of this lesson is dedicated to
practicing and learning Microsoft Publisher, as
well as how to search for articles on the
internet. Students will learn how to create text
boxes and insert pictures in Microsoft Publisher.
During this time students will explore resources
such as jstor and proquest to gather research on
    their topics.

8
Provide Knowledge of Results
  • I will be keeping a copy of all work submitted
for this presentation. I have built in a time and
day for evaluation of the student. This is the
time where I will share my thoughts, feedback and
things that could use improvement. I will also
share the results from their practicum. I feel
that meeting with every student individually is
    more efficient.

9
Review Activity
  • This would be a time where I would ask students
what they learned and was it fun. I want this to
be a fun activity and not want it to seem like
students are doing work .I feel that
incorporating a field trip at the end of the unit
is a great way to come to a close. Seeing
everything that they have been researching for
the past week will help them make those
connections with the material they have been
    researching.

10
Methods of Assessment
  • Students will use the internet in addition to
their Social Studies text book to research the
many battles that took place at Fort Ticonderoga.
With this information they will create featured
stories about people, places, and events that
happened at Fort Ticonderoga. I wants students to
furthers develop an understanding of these topics
    by doing their own research.

11
Methods of Assessment (cont)
  • To make sure students have an accurate
understanding of Microsoft Publisher, I will
require each student to sit down one on one with
me and go through a proficiency using the
program. They will be required to open the
program, create a new text document, and then
successfully insert a piece of clipart.
