PIPE DRAFTING
The "Basic" First Steps
2
When AutoCAD opens youll see something like
this. Select Maybe later and then click OK
If any other windows open up, just close them
down so you just have a blank screen like that
shown in the next slide.
3
Toolbars for layers, bylayers, zoom, etc.
Toolbar for copying, moving, breaking, offsets,
fillets chamfers
Toolbar for lines, shapes, hatching and text
Command Bar you can type in commands here
This shows that you are working in MODEL SPACE.
This means that anything you draw in this space
is drawn FULL SIZE.

LAYERS
You have various choices for colors to draw your
lines in AutoCAD. Each you can set By Layer
or By Object. By Layer Each layer has a
default color and if you dont tell AutoCAD
otherwise, objects inherit the properties of
the layer theyre created in. FOR NOW, DO NOT
CHANGE SETTINGS USING THIS By Object You can
override an objects layers settings by
selecting the object and then selecting another
color (layer) for the object.
CAD layers enable you to turn on or off groups of
related objects AND a lot more! Layers organize
objects into logical groups of things that belong
together like walls, equipment, notes control
other object display and plot properties like
color, linetype and lineweight make some editing
tasks more efficient and reduce the time that it
takes AUTOCAD to load some drawings Typically,
Layer 0 is reserved for the creation of block
symbols. Its also the AutoCAD default current
layer and until you define another layer and set
it current, all objects drawn are placed on and
belong to Layer 0.
5
BASIC LAYERS
These are the primary layers that you will need
when setting up your drawing. The color of your
lines depends on which are best visible to you at
this point (however, check with your instructor
as to their preference). Other layers and colors
can be added as you need them. The MAIN thing
to be aware of is the Linetype and Lineweight of
the individual lines.
Notice that 0 Layer is marked not to plot
typically its used for VIEWPORTS and you dont
want those lines to plot on your final drawing!
6
Lineweight
Before setting the lineweight in your layers
table, you need to know whether youre working in
mm or inches as to setting the weights. In DFTG
2423 (PIPING) you will be using inches.
In the toolbar, Click on Format. In the dropdown
menu, Click Lineweight.
In the Lineweight Settings window that opens, you
are given the option to use mm or inches. Unless
otherwise stated, in this class you will use
inches. Make sure the radio button by Inches is
pressed. Click OK.
7
SETTING UP LAYERS
  • CLICK ON the LAYERS PROPERTIES MANAGER in the Top
    Toolbar.

The 0 layer is already defined in the
window Click on New Layer icon to add another
layer.
This is the window that opens.
8
  • A new layer is placed in the window. But it has
mirrored the original layer. You want to change
the Name, Color, Linetype and Lineweight you
will do this for each layer that you add. Follow
the layer specification sheet you were provided
so as to set up the correct linetypes and
lineweights, the color of your lines is
arbitrarybut MAKE SURE youve got the right type
    and weights for the layers.

9
Change Layer Name
  • Click twice on the name of the new layer to
highlight it. Now type in VISIBLE. This will be
the layer that all your major lines and objects
    will be drawn in.

Set Layer Color
  • Click on the color of the new layer. A Select
Color window opens. Move your cursor down to the
white box and click on it. Click OK

10
Select Linetype
  • Click on the new layer linetype. In this case
    its shown as continuous.
  • A new window, Select Linetype, opens. If the
line type you need isnt shown, click LOAD and
another window will open that will allow you to
select from a longer list of linetypes.
  • In this example, we will continue to use
    Continuous for this VISIBLE layer.
  • Click on Continuous in the Select Linetype
    window.
  • Click OK.

11
Set Lineweight
  • If you have formatted your drawings lineweight as
described in an earlier slide, when you click on
the lineweight of your new layer, a new
Lineweight window will open that looks similar to
    the one at right.

Check back on the Basic Layers slide for the
lineweight required for the VISIBLE layer. In
this case it should be 0.024 Find this number in
the list in your Lineweight window. Click on
0.024 Click OK
Your table should now look like this.
12
You can repeat the steps shown in the previous
slides to add layers to your Layers Properties
Manager table. REMEMBER Use names for your
layers that will remind you what the layer is to
be used for as well as a helpful hint to anyone
that may have to work on that drawing later.
Its tough to try and decipher the
codenames that some of you come up with!!! The
names Ive supplied are pretty self-explanatory D
IMNOTES this layer is going to be used for
dimensions and notes on the drawing. HIDDEN
this layer is going to be used for the hidden
lines or objects on the drawing. CENTER this
layer is going to be used for centerlines on the
drawing. Etcetcetc The XL layers (1-5) are
used solely for construction
13
CONGRATULATIONS!!!! If youve made it this far,
you know what some of the basic buttons are on
your drawing area and have the basic steps needed
for setting up layers in your first piping
drawing.
Next well move on to actually drawing using all
these things!
