  • Architecture in the northern colonies kept the
idea of symmetry that was brought over from
    Renaissance Europe.
  • The homes of the northern colonies were built to
    withstand the harsh climate.
  • There are typically windows on both sides of the
front doorway and a second story which also has
windows evenly spaced across the front.

The Georgian Style
  • Georgian style follows the rules of architecture
first presented by Andrea Palladio in Italy
    during the Renaissance.
  • As northern colonists became more wealthy, they
built bigger homes. But they never made homes
that were overly fancy or decorated, because of
    the tradition of the Puritans.
  • The Puritans were very strict and believed in
living very plainly. They did not wear bright
colors or jewelry. Becuase of the Puritan
influence, the Georgian Style in the northern
    colonies remained very plain.

Dutch Colonial Homes
  • New York was known as New Netherlands because of
    the Dutch settlers there.
  • These home builders gave the Georgian style its
    own unique look.
  • The Dutch used a gabled roof that hang well over
the sides of the house and made it look more like
    a barn.
  • These homes usually had a stoop (a seat) on the
porch and one or two chimneys on the sides of the
    house.
  • This style of architecture also had an effect in
the Middle colonies, where many more Dutch and
    German people settled.

These houses below represent the development of
the Colonial house
This house was built in 1720. Notice the symmetry
with the central fireplace.
This house is a modern version of the Colonial,
and is very similar to the old version.

Values were reflected from Architecture
  • Besides basic living structures, the earliest
    colonists first important buildings were
    churches and meeting houses.
  • The statements these buildings made reflected
the settlers' values, like religion and
    conformity.
  • Back in the day, there were probably more
churches than there were houses in Puritan
    villages.
