Jackson State University (JSU) is among the nine
research institutions forming the national U24
Research Discovery team awarded a grant

U24 Resource Discovery
The U24 project is a major undertaking to
establish an informatics-based federated network
to link researchers to resources available across
the scientific community. Jackson States
component will be managed by the RTRN Data
Technology Coordinating Center (DTCC) and this
team will collaborate with Harvard Medical School
- lead institution, and the seven other
institutions Dartmouth College, Montana State
University, Morehouse School of Medicine, Oregon
Health Science University, University of
Alaska-Fairbanks, University of Hawaii and
University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus,
to build and populate an inventory and data
inquiry system that will allow scientists to
quickly and conveniently identify research tools
and resources to drive their research
efforts.

The nine sites, forming the initial core of the
Research Resource Network, will work
independently to discover and inventory
resources. Development, population, and
administration of the system will be conducted by
the three teams.

U24 Resource Discovery NETWORK ARCHITECTURE
Querying the Research Resources Network A
researcher will submit a query through the Web
portal. This query will be distributed to the
inventory management systems at all participating
sites (nine in the build-out phase of the
project, many more after network expansion
begins) via the query protocol. Results from
individual sites are aggregated and organized,
and returned to the user through the Web portal.

U24 Resource Discovery INVENTORY MANAGEMENT
SYSTEM (IMS)
Harvard will design, build and deploy a locally
managed inventory management system, which will
be adopted and maintained by each network site.
The IMS will collect, process, and store resource
data for the site, on a server managed by the
site. The IMS has four main elements Data
Collection Tools and Synchronization Processes,
Data Models and Ontologies, Data Curation Tools,
and the Inventory Database.

Development of the Data Curation tools will be
based on previous work such as the SHRINE
ontology mapping tool (SHRIMP) and Harvard
Catalyst Core Facilities application.
