Presentation Outline
  • The Problem
  • Achievement of Excellence
  • Value and benefit to the North East Institute
  • Value and benefit to the Wider Community
  • New developments and different approaches

3
The Problem
  • Prisons wish to train their inmates in skills
that are transferable to the world of work.
  • Difficult to find vocational teachers and
lecturers who are able and willing to go into
    the prison scenario.
  • Institute looked for an innovative way to use a
    virtual classroom approach using ASCOT
CourseMaster product (this allows a tutor to
talk to, and see, the students via an ISDN
telephone line and share a software application).

    carried out.
  • Oct - Dec 1998 CAD Team involved in further
research including a link from London to
    Dublin.

VALUE AND BENEFIT TO THE INSTITUTION (1)
  • Project bonded a team of lecturers together to
research a leading edge method of delivery and
    learning in a virtual classroom.
  • The team won a UK BEACON AWARD for Colleges of
Further and Higher Education entitled The BBC
Education Award for the use of Television, Video
and Audio media in the Delivery of Distance
Learning. We were the first college in Northern
    Ireland to gain the award.
  • The team won a BT ICT Award for its pioneering
work in using telephone communications to further
    education and training.
  • A very close working relationship with the
Educational Unit in the prison has been
    established.

11
VALUE AND BENEFIT TO THE INSTITUTION (2)
  • An international partnership with a French
Company started to develop as the team sought to
allow exchange of techniques to be carried out.
The team visited the offices of the company in
    Paris and held exploratory talks.
  • The Mechanical Engineering Section was recognised
a Regional Centre of Excellence for the
    Manufacturing Industry status by government.
  • Programme Manager for Mechanical Engineering was
    successfully nominated for the EDEXCEL
    Outstanding Lecturer Award 2000.
  • The team has now the knowledge, capability and
the will to undertake applications for further
European monies for Curriculum and Research
    Projects.

12
VALUE AND BENEFIT TO WIDER COMMUNITY (1)
  • The programme has been integral to prisoners
preparation for release as the inmates trained on
the programme have now got modern industrial
    employable skills.
  • A new transferable skill has been gained by the
prisoners as most of them had no previous
    experience of CAD.
  • Twenty one inmates now have a Level 3
qualification in the use of AutoCAD, an
industrial CAD software used extensively in the
    Engineering and Construction industries.

13
VALUE AND BENEFIT TO WIDER COMMUNITY (2)
  • The Prison now has an expectation in that they
can hook into more programmes of this nature.
  • The Institute is now seen as a centre of
teaching, learning and research for such
    programmes.
  • The technology used in the project is such that
no other similar programme has been attempted in
the United Kingdom. Some hybrids of the
technology have been identified, but none
directly, as far as we are aware, are in
    operation in this particular mode.

14
NEW DEVELOPMENTS/APPROACHES
  • Develop new provision opportunities e.g.
3-Dimensional Design using AutoCAD or Using
AutoCAD AEC in the Built Environment.
  • To extend the Video Conferencing side to allow
interaction of prison inmates with Institute
    students.
  • Another Prison Education Unit within the province
is now investigating replicating the system.
  • Possibility for other prison authorities within
the UK to invest in such a set up.
  • To facilitate access by the Prison Education
Service to Machine Tools in Our Institute using a
reverse of the current process. The students
would be able to see the machine tool actually
    cutting the component.
