Title: UNIFORM MOTION

1
UNIFORM MOTION
  • Uniform motion can be described by a simple
    mathematical ratio.
  • Both distance and time measurements are required
    to describe uniform motion.

2
Describing Uniform Motion
  • Oddly enough uniform motion does not necessarily
have any feelof motion at all. (How could this
    be so?)
  • Mathematically uniform motion is
  • A RATIO V?d/?t. This idea includes the slope
of the velocity graph that is, the ratio of ?d?t
  • change in distance. . . . . . . ?d d f - d i
    (RISE)
  • change in time. . . .. . . . . . . ?t t f - t
    i (RUN)
  • A VECTOR quantity having both
  • a magnitude and
  • a direction.

3
Measuring UNIFORM Motion
  • Time and distance must both be measured. ( In the
example at the right the data table is designed
and prepared for the drawing of two graphs.)
  • Distance /time graph (d, t)
  • Acceleration graph (V, t)
  • What would these graphs look like? The first
graph at the right is uniform motion.
  • How is this different from non uniform motion?(
    2nd graph-click)

4
The Language of Motion
  • -1- Make a Chart (all on one page landscape
orientation ) for the terms on p296. Use the
center -page picture to help develop
    comprehension..
  • -2- Check your Understanding by doing the
    questions 1-5 on p304
  • -3- Read about VECTORS pp300 301 (Make content
    notes.)
  • Develop your understanding by doing Heading for
    Home pp302 303)

5
Scientific Measurement
  • This skill will be developed on a needs basis.
The following resources will help develop skills
    in recording and interpreting scientific
    measurements
  • Power point Scientific Measurement
  • Related practice worksheets.
  • Related practical activities.

6
EXPLORING Uniform Motion
  • The worksheet at the right allows you to change
    the variables of
  • distance, d / time, t
  • The table recalculates and redraws the velocity
and acceleration graphs for the new variables
    entered.
  • Do the Data Studio Workbooks matchgraph1.ds-matc
hgraph4.ds They will help you get a feel for
uniform motion as they relate movement to the
    shape of a graph.

7
Consolidation 1 Uniform Motion
  • 1- WALKING IN UNIFORM MOTION p308-309 Use the
table provided measure data for walking in
uniform motion. Make measurements for 12m /12s
in equal time intervals. Then complete the
    graphs. DO Q1-7 p308-309
  • Review Precision pp299-300
  • 2- Read p305 9.3 Measuring Motion with
    TICKER-TAPE
  • Do Questions 3-6 p314.
  • Do two graphs for comparison one for uniform one
for non-uniform motion. Use about 1.6m of tape.

8
Motion PROJECT
  • -1-DESIGN AND BUILD A MOUSETRAP CAR.
  • The design parameters and approved materials list
  • are in the handout. http//scifair.ednet.ns.ca/CKC
    LS/isci10/mtc02/mywebquest/index.htm
  • Completion date for the car with 10 m trial run
    __________
  • -2- PROJECT REPORT
  • Modify for (2.5-10 m) run if necessary and
collect data for the cars motion
characteristics. ( depending on how the motion is
measured, ticker-tape, stopwatch, sonic ranger .
    . . )
  • Completion date for the project report.
    __________

9
Consolidation REVIEW Uniform Motion
  • -1-Complete the two tasks, EXPLORING Uniform
    Motion
  • Spreadsheet simulation ?d/?t, ?v/?t
  • Qualitative simulation
  • Quantitative simulation
  • -2- Complete the quiz on shapes and trends of
typical motion graphs for uniform and non-uniform
    motion.
