The Mitochondria
The mitochondria is found in all eukaryotic cells
except the protist Chaos Carolinensis.
Expecially found in cells and parts of cells with
active processes. Its main function is the
production of energy in the form of adenosine
triphosphate (ATP). The mitochondria also helps
the bodies metabolism. Mitochondria are places
for aerobic respiration, but they have two
membranes (inner and outer). This existence of
two membranes has led biologists to believe that
mitochondria are descendants of some bacteria.
Mitochondria also have their own DNA and
ribosomes.
This picture shows the mitochondrias inner
structure (the inner and outer membrane, the
cristae, and the matrix.
