Why Assess Fire Risks ?

• Assessments are required as a duty of care by
  the Management of Health Safety at Work
  Regulations 1992
• Also by the Fire Precautions (Workplace)
  Regulations 1997
• Assessments supplement Fire Certificates issued
  by the Fire Brigade under the 1971 Fire
  Regulations
• Help to identify and eliminate potential fire
  risks at your workplace, reducing the chances of
  a fire breaking out
• 40 of SMEs do not survive a major fire

Assessing fire differs from other risk
assessments -

• The risk is not static
• You are assessing something that you cant see

Which areas need assessment ?

• Assessments required for all areas
• Buildings (and rooms within buildings)
• Temporary structures e.g portakabins
• Vehicles

All assessments must be reviewed regularly

• At least annually OR
• If the fire risk changes in an area

For a fire to occur, you need three ingredients-

• A fuel solid, gas or liquid
• Heat an ignition source
• Oxygen

What to think about when assessing a fire risk

• Fuel packages wood, textiles, paper
• Potential heat or ignition sources
• Ventilation
• If any of these three ingredients are removed,
  a fire will be extinguished
