Title: CO2 Field during a Frontal Passage

1
CO2 Field during a Frontal Passage
  • Colorado State University
  • Aaron Wang

2
SiB-RAMS Coupled Model
  • SiB and RAMS have been coupled, and we are
    testing it.
  • A coupled model enables the atmosphere to see
CO2 flux from the surface right at each time step.

3
Data Preparation
  • meteorology data ETA 40 km 3-hour at grid 212
  • soil map IGBP 10 km
  • vegetation map AVHRR satellite 1 km from U. of
    Maryland
  • NDVI climatology NDVI 1 km monthly for now,
SPOT NDVI 1 km 10-day in the future
  • sea surface temperature climatology SST 1
    degree monthly
  • topography USGS 1 km
  • soil moisture homogeneous for now, offline SiB
    output later

4
Model Setups
  • horizontal resolution 40 km, 20 km, and finer
  • vertical resolution from 60 m to 1200 m
  • time step 50 s for the 1st grid or smaller
  • others Kuo convection scheme, Harrington
    radiation scheme, Mellor-Yamada diffusion scheme,
    microphysics of medium complexity,
    Klemp/Wilhelmson boundary condition, boundary
    nudging of medium strength, etc.
  • SiB or LEAF is our land surface parameterization.
    Fossil fuel emission turns on/off.

Future Work
  • Implement heterogeneous soil moisture
    initialization
  • Implement SPOT NDVI input
  • New morphology table and respiration factor map
  • Compare with observation
  • Compare results with the runs having prescribed
    CO2 flux

research possible.
