Why Mapping and MapServer

• As part of web standardization, needed a way to
  create map for home page.
• Display other data in map format too.
• MapServer works inside AWIPs and NCRFC does not
  have ArcGIS inside firewall.
• Open Source and easily programmable.

Basic Process

• For point data scripts query database and
  create text files.
• Text files are used to create Shape Files using
  gen2shp and txt2dbf scripts.
• For raster data scripts check to see when files
  are last updated and then run through xmrgtoascii
  script.
• PHP Map Script is then used to make static images

Intranet Interactive Map

• Same processes create shapefiles.
• Have the ability to turn on/off layers, zoom and
  query.
• Using as a way to get information to Service
  Hydrologists and WFOs.
• Need to have another machine running Map Server
  with all data outside of AWIPs.

Interactive Map Future Additions

• Add better zooming tools, requires JavaScripting.
• Add more data layers.
• Link to PostGIS. Allows for database queries,
  can create map totaling days of rain fall, for
  example.
