Making a Data Plot for Pressure Readings
  • Go to the weather station's website by typing the
    websites address into your browser

Saving the Spreadsheet
  • Now Click on Export Data
  • Select Save to Disk and
  • press OK
  • Choose the folder where
  • you want to save it in
  • and click on Save

Preparing for Pressure Plots
  • Open the file in Microsoft Excel. You should now
    have the information you need to make the plots
  • Adjust the columns by moving the divider between
    them so that you can read the entries
  • Select Column A then right click. Select Insert
  • In the new column A, label A1 as
  • Hours from Initial Time and enter numbers 1 to
    25 below
  • Now select the values (not including the title)
    of the 'Pressure' column which you want to study
    and hold the Ctrl button on your keyboard
  • While holding the Ctrl button select the Hours
    after Initial Time values for the Pressure
    data you have chosen earlier

Formatting the Plot
  • Once the Hours after Initial Time' and
    'Pressure' column are selected go to the Insert
    tab and choose Chart
  • A menu (Step 1 of 4) will appear. Choose the XY
    (Scatter) Chart Type
  • Choose the Scatter with data points connected by
    lines under the Chart Sub-type as shown at the
    right. Then click on Next gt
  • For the next menu (Step 2 of 4) make sure that
    the Series is in Columns. Then click on Next gt

  • For the next menu (Step 3 of 4) type in the
    titles of the Chart, the x-axis, and the y-axis
  • Click on the Legend tab and make sure that the
    box next to the Show Legend is unchecked. Click
    on Next gt
  • For the next menu (Step 4 of 4) choose the bubble
    next to As new sheet
  • Name the sheet. (i.e. Pressure Graph)
  • Click Finish

  • Your plot should appear (though the line will
    look different)

Finding the Changes in Pressure
  • Select the values from the Pressure column that
    you want to study
  • While holding the Ctrl button select the Hours
    from Initial Time values for the Pressure data
    you have chosen earlier
  • Right click on one of the columns and select Copy
  • Now make a new spread sheet
  • Click on the first cell and paste the columns by
    going to the Edit tab and choosing Paste
  • Note the first cell can be called by what column
    and row it is in. For example the first cell is
    called A1

  • To find the difference between the first two
    pressure readings go to cell C2 and type in
    B2-B1
  • This will give the difference between the first
    and second values and place it next to the second
    value
  • To calculate the rest of the differences just
    select cell C2 click on the lower right corner of
    the entry. Then drag down until you get to the
    last row of the data then let go

Plotting the Changes in Pressure
  • Select all the hours you want to study (except in
    the first row of data)
  • Hold Ctrl then select all the values of the
    pressure change that go with the hours you have
    just chosen
  • Create a Chart as you have done before
  • Recap
  • Choose the XY (Scatter) Chart Type
  • Choose the Scatter with data points connected by
    lines under the Chart Sub-type
  • Make sure that the Series is in Columns
  • Dont forget to label your chart and your axes
  • In the Legend tab make sure the box next to Show
    Legend is unchecked
  • In the last step choose the bubble next to As new
    sheet

Understanding Wind Direction
  • The column regarding Wind Direction will look
    similar to that shown at the right
  • To learn about degrees you can look at the site
  • We look at the circular compass to understand the
    direction
  • At 0 degrees the wind is blowing east
  • At 90 degrees it is blowing east
  • At 180 it is blowing west
  • At 270 it is blowing south
