Title: 21st Century Learning Creative Learning

1
21st Century LearningCreative Learning
  • The 21st century learner will learn about the
world from parents, media, friends, teachers and
    life experiences.
  • The question is what will they learn, from where
and how will they interpret and act on this
    information.
  • As educators we should ask what part we play in
that process and whether this is by design or by
    default.

2
Where Are We Now?
  • At Two Waters we are teaching and learning within
a curriculum that was developed by the Government
from 1999. We have developed our curriculum using
all the new strategies and initiatives that have
    been introduced over the years
  • It focuses on knowledge and skills and we have
naturally integrated qualities into our teaching
and modelled the personal qualities we want
children to develop. We now need to focus more on
these qualities and see how we can integrate them
into the school curriculum in a natural way that
    is not contrived

3
  • 21st Century learners will need certain
    qualities, knowledge, understanding and skills
that may actually be very different from the ones
they end up using when they enter the adult world
  • However the qualities they will need to enter the
global economy and to become a responsible
citizen are less likely to change
  • These qualities are not a subject but a context
for and an approach to all learning
  • New guidance gives us flexibility to change and
to integrate these qualities into the school
curriculum and the whole school environment
  • We need to identify the qualities and create a
  • curriculum that integrates knowledge, skills
    and
  • qualities

What Qualities Do You Think Are Important For The
21st Century Learner?
  • Committed
  • Motivated
  • Co-operative
  • Resourceful
  • Flexible
  • Open-Minded
  • Independent
  • These are not a set of key concepts that have to
    be
  • learnt. It is about ways of engaging and relating
    and
  • ways of thinking and knowing. These are Global
    qualities
  • and will aid children throughout their lives.

5
Global Learning In Practice
  • Make Global learning an every day norm
  • As part of our teaching we always relate learning
to every day living. We are learning this today
    because
  • Often we will ask the children why are we
learning this today? How will this help us in our
    everyday life?
  • We create an atmosphere in our school where
    children can ask questions
  • We discuss difficult issues and answer
  • questions

6
  • We explore through stories, drama, role play,
    puppets, photographs, internet etc
  • We embed as part of every day teaching and
    classroom practice
  • We underpin through fostering values of fair
play, self respect and respect for others and the
environment both inside and outside school
  • We celebrate using the diversity within the
classroom, school and community both at a local
    and global level

7
Our New Curriculum
  • What do we want
  • We have now put together our long term plans.
Our next step is to plan in the medium term so
that we give opportunities for our children to
engage and have ownership of the learning. In
this way we can instinctively build on the
    qualities we have agreed on.

8
Finally Consider This!
  • The sand tray at Nursery, this is what we learn
  • Share everything
  • Play fair
  • Dont hit people
  • Put things back where you found them
  • Clean up our own mess
  • Dont take things that arent yours
  • Say you are sorry when you hurt someone
  • These are the qualities.
  • What knowledge can the children gain in the sand
    tray?
  • What are the skills they can develop?
  • How do we plan for knowledge, skills and
    qualities?
