• NASA (National Aeronautics and Space
  Administration) is started
• April 12, 1961
• Yuri Gagarin becomes the first man in space. He
  was from the Soviet Union
• May 5, 1961
• Alan Shepard becomes the first American in space
• Nine months later, John Glen becomes the first
  man to orbit the earth
• Together, Shepard and Glen head up Project
  Mercury
• January 27, 1967
• Project Apollo faces set back when a fire kills
  three astronauts
• July 20, 1969
• Neil Armstrong and Edwin Buzz Aldrin become the
  first men to walk on the moon.
