Political Reasons for American Involvement in the
Vietnam War
Daniel Franck
2
Background
  • After the French Indochina War, the 17th Parallel
was created, separating North and South Vietnam.
  • The Soviet Union and China supported and gave aid
to the Communist North Vietnam and the US did the
same for the Democratic South Vietnam.
  • The US supported South Vietnamese President Diem,
    a strong anti-communist.
  • In 1961, when communists tried to remove Diem
from power, the US deployed many troops into
    Vietnam.

3
Why did the US enter the war?
  • The Containment Policy
  • The Domino Theory

4
The Containment Policy
  • The term containment was first used by George
    Keenan, in the Long Telegram.
  • Containment became a policy used by the US to
prevent the spread of Communism outside of the
    Soviet Union.
  • To defend South Vietnam from the communists in
the North, the US entered the war.

5
The Domino Theory
  • The Domino Theory, started by President Truman,
was the idea that if one country turned to
    communism, more countries would follow.
  • Eisenhower used it to justify the US fighting in
    Vietnam.
  • Because of Vietnams geographical location, a
communist victory could cause communism to spread
to Hawaii and to the western United States.
