Title: Monitoring Location Pilot Project

1
Monitoring Location Pilot Project
2
Purpose of pilot project
  • Initial step towards sharing data on a simplistic
    level
  • Use existing standards and schema to build Excel
    template to share information
  • Environmental Data Standards Council (EDSC)
    standards
  • Water Quality Exchange (WQX) Schema
  • Flexibility to add/delete info as needed
  • Sets the stage for Exchange Network Grant (if we
    get it)
  • Obtain monitoring location info for GoMODP
    projects for web application

3
Project Development
  • Ray Konisky, Tom Shyka, and Deb Soule initially
    create template
  • Reviewed applicable standards and WQX schema to
develop short list of monitoring location info
    items of interest
  • Development was quick about 1 hour to create.
  • Info on data owner/contact, project, and
monitoring locations in an Excel Template
  • Tested ability to create data according to
    template
  • Executive and Technical Committee Reviews
  • Minor revisions
  • Call for data contributors 10/26/2006
  • NHDES, ME DMR, UNH COOA, Huntsman Marine Science
    Centre and GoMOOS contributed
  • GoMOOS creates initial web application

4
Environmental Information Exchange Network Grant
5
About the grant
  • EPA sponsored grant to further information
    exchange using its Exchange Network
  • Applied 11/17/2006 for 465,097 will hear in
    summer 2006 if get it
  • Formal grant partners
  • NH Department of Env. Services (applicant)
  • GoMOOS (most of the work)
  • Tufts University SEANET
  • Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment
  • University of South Carolina Research Foundation
  • Coastal Ocean Observing Center, UNH
  • Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NFSC- NOAA)
  • USEPA Atlantic Ecology Division
  • Centre for Marine Biodiversity
  • Atlantic Reference Centre (actually informal
    partner)
  • Other partners can still participate just no

6
We signed up to
  • Develop and implement an Exchange Network host
    node at GoMOOS.
  • Set up node clients for participating partners.
  • Develop and implement data exchange schema (for
    project, station, and result data).
  • Develop web application to display data and
monitoring locations and allow for queries.

7
Benefits
  • to do what we agreed to do in MOU
  • By using standards, can more readily communicate
with outside groups using same standards
  • Possible crosswalk between these standards and
    others?
  • Using a framework that has been in use for a few
years by many types of environmentally oriented
    programs
  • Process still allows for flexibility we create
    what we need
  • Do not need to change partner databases just
need to map to schema developed
  • We will have interoperability
  • Transferability other partners can still
    contribute
