Health and Safety Induction Legal Requirements
  • Welcome to LeedsMet.
  • The University takes its health and safety
    responsibilities very seriously.
  • The HS at Work Act 1974 - Places a duty on
    Employers i.e. LeedsMet to ensure the Health
    Safety of employees and that of others who maybe
    affected by its activities.
  • The HSAWA 1974 also places a duty on employees to
    ensure their own HS that of others who may be
    affected by their acts and or omissions

Legal Requirements
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work
    Regulations 1999 require Risk Assessments to be
    made of work activities in order that they can be
    carried out safely.
  • Other Legislation is specific to specialised
    areas of work e.g. COSHH for the use of chemicals
    in Laboratories Workshops etc

LeedsMet Safety Policy
  • GENERAL POLICY STATEMENT - how LeedsMet will
    carry out its Health and Safety responsibilities
    and duties - Section 1 of the Policy, can be seen
    on display on the HS notice-boards
  • FACULTY AND SERVICE AREAs have specific policy
    documents which state how they will carry out
    their specific Health Safety responsibilities
    duties

Health and Safety Responsibilities of Individuals
  • 5.1 Legislation requires that each person accepts
    responsibility for her/his own safety and that of
    others who may be affected by her/his work
    activities.
  • 5.2 The University requires individual employees,
    students, visitors and contractors to co-operate
    fully in ensuring that the Health and Safety
    Policy other University health and safety
    regulations, procedures, codes of practice and
    any local (ie work area) health and safety
    policies and procedures are complied with

Section 5 Health and Safety Responsibilities of
Individuals
  • ii to carry out all operations duties in the
    prescribed manner, using the equipment correctly,
    including safety equipment or clothing provided,
    so that personal safety or the safety of others
    is not put at risk
  • iii to report immediately any defects in plant or
    equipment and report immediately any accidents or
    incidents which have led, or may lead, to damage
    to plant or equipment
  • iv to co-operate with the investigation of
    accidents and to suggest ways of eliminating
    hazards
  • v to avoid changing established work practices
    without a risk assessment having been made and
    formally evaluated by a competent person

Section 5 Health and Safety Responsibilities of
Individuals
  • vi to maintain intact and not interfere with or
    misuse intentionally or recklessly anything
    provided in the interests of health, safety or
    welfare
  • vii to set a positive personal example at all
    times with respect to health and safety.
  • 5.3 Failure on the part of an employee or student
    to comply with these requirements of the Health
    and Safety Policy may be subject to the relevant
    disciplinary procedures.
  • 5.4 Failure on the part of a contractor or
    visitor to comply with these requirements of the
    Health and Safety Policy will be subject to such
    action as is necessary/appropriate to the
    circumstances.

ILLNESS, ACCIDENT REPORTING FIRST AID
  • All ILLNESS/ACCIDENTS must be reported to
    recorded by LeedsMet staff
  • HS1 Report Forms to be used
  • FIRST AID NOTICES provide information where First
    Aid assistance is available
  • ACCIDENT/HAZARD REPORTING helps in the prevention
    of accidents

SUMMARY
  • There are certain points that apply to all
    emergency situations-
  • You should commit to memory the Fire Action
    Notice information. You wont have time to read
    it in an emergency.
  • Remember you are expected to act in the spirit of
    the instructions.There is no substitute for
    common sense.
  • The most important consideration at all times is
    your safety.

SUMMARY Continued
  • Remember if you become a casualty someone must
    rescue you, possibly at personal risk to
    themselves
  • You should act quietly and methodically.
  • You should not rush or attempt to pass others
    when leaving the scene of an emergency
  • The senior employee present should assume control
    of the emergency situation

HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
  • The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
    Regulations 2002 (as amended) control the safe
    use of hazardous substances.
  • May be used safely, by following good practice or
    dealt with in a controlled manner in a variety of
    laboratory or workshop practical activities.

  • GASES
