• Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Seuss Geisel
• March 2, 1904 September 24, 1991
• Wrote/illustrated over 40 childrens books
• Had two sisters who died of pneumonia

Why Dr. Seuss is Dr. Seuss

• Attended Dartmouth College class of 1925
• As a freshman, he wrote for the Dartmouth
  Jack-O-Lantern (humor magazine)
• Held a drinking party and thus violated
  Prohibition
• Forced to resign from extracurricular activities
• Continued to write for the Jack-O-Lantern under a
  pen name of Seuss
• After graduating, his first work was signed Dr.
  Seuss

• Seuss was his mothers maiden name, and also
  his middle name.
• Seuss is German and should therefore be properly
  pronounced like ZOICE.
• Used the pen name Theo. LeSieg for books he did

  his fathers hope that he would earn the
  doctorate

fifty words. Dr. Seuss accepted the bet for
50.00, and the outcome was Green Eggs and Ham.
