The ICONS essay
  • This essay will enable you to explore issues of
the local and global from your own experience.
You need to write about something (a person,
    building, monument, natural feature, cultural
practice) that you consider to be local to its
setting ie it is unique to its location, or not a
    part of global culture.
  • OHT examples of New Zealand icons

11
The ICONS essay will also enable you to locate
yourself in the relationship between the local
and the global
  • What is local in my life
  • my examples
  • I was born in New Zealand (Hawera, South
    Taranaki)
  • I regard myself as a New Zealander (or, more
    properly, as Pakeha)
  • etc
  • Your experiences?
  • What is global in my life
  • my examples
  • As an academic, I move easily around the world
    (2-3 trips per year)
  • All arrangements have been made (electronically)
    in advance
  • etc
  • Your experiences?

12
Why does it matter?
  • How does globalisation impact on us?
  • What are the positives, in NZ? (the perfect
    globalised state?
  • If there are negative effects, how can we change
    them?
  • Are there any more ethical alternatives?
  • How does change come about?
  • What work does media do?
