• The Cinnamon Hill House and Gardens at
  Lunuganga have resulted from almost fifty years
  of gradual change. It is considered to be one of
  the two definitive works that best gives an
  insight into Bawas ideas on architecture and
  life. Bawa bought the abandoned rubber estate in
  1948. Inspired by the sprawling formal gardens of
  European country houses, some judicial clearing
  opened up delightful vistas across the slopes to
  the lake. The existing house was shut in by dense
  foliage which was cut back to exploit the
  splendid views. The walls of previously closed
  verandahs were demolished for the same reason and
  these rooms then opened out to the garden. The
  old house was altered extensively.The invasion
  of the house by the outdoors was to Bawa an
  integral part of living in the tropics. It also
  accentuated the tranquility of the bedrooms with
  their inner courtyards. Earlier housing for farm
  animals to the east of the house was altered to
  make the present Galleries. The Garden Room was
  built at a section of the terraces behind, its
  position and shape dictated by the mature
  hardwood trees already present. The room is large
  and light and became the main living area of the
  house. Steps connecting the house to the Water
  Garden link the series of pavilions and terraces
  at different levels.
