Planning
  • IMPORTANT FOR ALL ACTIVITIES, ESPECIALLY OUTDOOR
    ACTIVITIES
  • SHOULD BE DONE DURING ANNUAL PACK PLANNING
    MEETING
  • 6 STEPS

Consider the task!
  • What has to be done?
  • When?
  • Who is responsible for what?
  • Does everyone understand their job?

Consider the resources.
  • How much time is available?
  • Skills in the Pack? i.e. Cooking, fire-building,
    nature knowledge
  • Equipment and supplies availability
  • Other items needed - permits?
  • Resources - Boy Scout Troop?

Consider the alternatives!
  • Plan B in case of bad weather.
  • Emergency procedures - fire or medical.
  • MAKE SURE NO ONE IS DISAPPOINTED TO DUE OUR
    FAILURE TO PLAN!!!

Write the plan.
  • Everyone will know what to expect.
  • Use it for preparation and as a checklist.
  • It can be used by other leaders for future
    activities.

Put the plan into action! Just Do It!
  • Too often great plans are drawn never followed.
  • Be prepared to make adjustments.
  • HAVE FUN!

Evaluation
  • Need to determine
  • What worked well.
  • What problems we had.
  • Changes for the future.
  • Make a permanent record.
  • Include suggestions for future.
  • How to handle criticism?
  • Assign the critic the job for next outing.

  • Pack Camping - At least 1 leader be BALOO
    trained (1day training offered by Districts)
  • Webelos Camping - Leader should be WLOT trained
    (Weekend training offered by Districts).

  • Protect Health Safety of each member
  • Adhere to Med form policy - boys leaders
  • Class I for Cubs for all activities
  • Class II for Cubs Leaders (under 40) for camps
  • Class III for Seasoned Leaders over 40
  • Always have 1st Aid Kit
  • Buddy System for Cub scouts
  • Know where to get medical assistance - have phone
    plan for emergencies.

Policies continued
  • Check out activity location in advance. Know
    where hazardous locations are avoid them.
  • Dont play inappropriate games /sports.
  • Select a well defined gathering place in case of
    emergency or separation.
  • Always have adult supervision with fire building,
    cooking, and campfires.

Water Safety Policy - (Refer to guide to Safe
Scouting)
  • Home Swimming - Adult Supervised
  • Safety Afloat BSA Policy
  • Cubs Scouts limited to canoeing / rafting only on
    flat water ponds, in Council or District events,
    or controlled lakes free of power boats
    sailboats. Cub must be instructed in basic
    handling and safety practices prior to canoeing.

BB-Guns Archery
  • Only as part of Day Camp, Resident Camp, or
    Council sponsored programs, with trained
    supervisors.

Protect Each Leader
  • 2 - Deep leadership policy
  • 1 leader must be 29at least 21 years old and the
    other must be at least 18 years of age.

WHAT TO DO?
  • Inter-pack Activities
  • Are best done on a 1 pack basis. Easier to
    plan. Goal to make it fun for everyone.
  • Multi-pack events need Council Approval!
  • Pack / District / Council Events
  • Daycamp / Adventure Camp / Cub Winter Day /
    Conservation Projects

What to do - continued
  • Family Camping - Overnite camping not authorized
    for younger scouts except as part of family
    camping, and is not covered by General Liability
    Coverage of BSA
  • Webelos Camping - Parent and son together. Can
    be done as a den, or with a scout troop, except
    Camporees (although webelos can visit during the
    day at Camporees). Webelos are encouraged to
    participate in several overnites.
  • Drug / Alcohol policy No Alcoohol and no
    controlled substances. Tobacco is discouraged.
  • Council approved campgrounds list available.

  • Not required for any trip inside Dan Beard
    Council
  • Local Rule
  • Not required for Webelos overnite inside DBC
  • Local Rule
  • Dont sign contracts (bus charter) without
    authorization of your Chartering Organization
  • Get driver information well in advance of trip.
  • License info / insurance info.
  • Permit due to Council 2 weeks before trip.

National Tour Permits
  • Dont bother planning a trip which requires one!
  • Cubs are only supposed to stay out one night
    anyway, and 500 miles would take up the majority
    of the time available for the trip!
  • Too much planning and cost involved.
  • Regulations on where you can stay.
