Statewide Management Goals for Deer
  • Preserve, protect, perpetuate, and manage deer
and their habitat to ensure healthy and
    productive populations
  • Manage deer for a variety of recreational,
    educational, and aesthetic purposes including
    hunting, scientific study, cultural, subsistence,
and ceremonial uses by Native Americans, wildlife
    viewing, and photography
  • Manage statewide deer populations for a
    sustainable annual harvest by hunters.

  • Annual proportion of 5 point bucks
  • Proportion of spike yearling bucks
  • Annual proportion of ages 4 5 bucks
  • Ratio of antlerless to antlered deer taken by
    hunters

Hunter Check Stations
  • O B J E C T I V E S
  • Sample hunters deer harvested from GMUs
  • Collect sex, age, antler, and other data
  • Facilitate face-to-face interaction with our
hunters and monitor how the season is
    progressing.

So are White-tailed Deer taking over
Washington State and places beyond ?
35
Short answer NO !But White-tailed Deer
are
  • Highly adaptable to different environments
  • Have a high rate of reproduction
  • Can withstand substantial population loss from
hunting and other forms of predation

36

As a consequence White-tails have expanded their
range in the west including within Washington
State and there is circumstantial evidence that
this has been at the expense of Mule Deer in some
locales
37
In summary White-tailed Deer remain the most
adaptable, most widely distributed, most
numerous, and most important big game animal in
North America - and if not the most - certainly
a top contender within Washington State as well
