Title: Mobilising Tourism Businesses to drive tourism in Zululand

1
Mobilising Tourism Businessesto drive tourism in
Zululand
  • SATSA-The leading body representing the private
sector of the incoming SA tourism industry
  • In the Inbound industry in SA, SATSA stands for
  • Credibility, integrity and stability
  • A member driven, non-profit association
    representing the private sector.
  • Offers Opportunities for networking
  • Represents
  • Transport providers, tour operators, DMCs,
    Accomm suppliers, Tourism Brokers, Adventure
    Tourism Providers, Business Tourism Providers,
    Tourism Services Providers
  • Members are bonded, providing financial guarantee
of deposits held against involuntary liquidation
    of a SATSA member

2
Why am I telling you this?
  • The importance of stakeholders working side by
    side can not be underestimated.
  • In Ethekwini, fedhasa, saaci, satsa, skal, naa,
asata have started to work very closely.
  • This fosters great partnerships and creates
    networking platforms.
  • In addition we get to know whose who in the
    tourism industry and successful tourism
businesses know how to count on individuals who
    make up such forums
  • Also it helps in setting standards, trying to get
members to adhere to such and providing an
influencing effect when lobbying with government.
  • It also gets people to talk to each other and
work together and be supportive of each other
  • For example, members from Zululand who have
gotten to work quite closely with various trade
members in ethekwini and are known in the
province also having won some awards-Zulu Kingdom
    Service Excellence Award

3
Understand the Industry
  • Not one in which money is printed overnight
  • Not glamorous and requires people who are
    passionate about making it work.
  • Its not about setting up a BnB nor putting
    vehicles on the road.
  • Its about creating experiences in this land
called SA and getting people to come back again.

4
.
  • Why because we are competing with the EUs of
this world, Americas, Singapore, Malaysia, and
    other great destinations
  • So you have to understand the product you are
    offering.
  • BnBs want to offer transportgreat but do you
have the permits to do so.
  • Are you qualified as a tour guide to sell a tour
    to your client

5
.
  • Hotels running their own wheels division
  • Is it cost effective???
  • Tour brokers/Travel agents having their own
    wheelsdoes it make sense?

6
Support the supply chain
  • Its not difficult to support your neighbour
  • Outsource.
  • Work with smaller players for that experience
  • Taxi operators can be upskilledthese are people
with fleets. Reality is that government is
supportive of this industry. Yes it does
marginalise-but then lets skill the drivers so
that if you do outsource-you are comfortable in
    using these operators

7
Leverages
  • Tourism Enterprise Partnership Acronym TEP

small and medium enterprises in the tourism
sector. Focus on increasing business activities

Tourism Skills Development
  • Opportunities are endless ito tourism education
    but in a responsible manner
  • SA Tourism fundi programmes
  • Chamber runs tourism skills programmes
  • SATSA runs tour operator programme
  • Fedhasa is running hospitality programmes
  • These need to be coordinated centrally to drive
and improve on the quality of tourism offering in
    Zululand

11
Infrastructure Advantages
  • What does ZULULAND have in its favour
  • Berthing Facilities-Cruise Tourism
  • Fastest growing cities in SA
  • Strategic and growing port
  • Great weather (I could be wrong)
  • Airport
  • Hotels
  • Car rentals
  • Tour operators
  • Bus companies( experienced enough to run
    Ethekwinis servicesand were not complaining
    yet!!!)

12
Other Attractions
  • Safari Experiences
  • Close access to game reserves
  • Sport and Adventure Tourism
  • Scuba diving and snorkelling
  • World Heritage Site close proximity
  • Close to Mozambique
  • Close to Swaziland
  • Close to MpumalangaKruger
  • Close to the Battlefields
  • Close to Durban with N2 and new airport

13
Opportunities
  • Tourism Packages
  • Possible camps for Team supporters
  • Pitch to international airlines
  • Bring in charter flights
  • Advertise at WTM, ITB
  • Attend international road shows to market RB
  • Do you have a presence at INDABA???

14
What can you do for the WC2010
  • Make RB more attractive
  • Perhaps start some online marketing campaign
  • Develop your citizens to become tourism
    ambassadors
  • Build capacities-people will be looking for
    luxury coaches, semi-lux coaches
  • Restaurants need to up their ante
  • Take stock of your hotel inventories-create some
forum whereby people can make their room
availabilities known so that people know what
options they have instead of thinking youre
    fully booked.
  • Send delegations to visit qualifying countries to
host them. Zim has sent a delegation to Brazil
(not possible as teams must stay in SA-but
theyre thinking out of the box)
  • Market to the tour operators selling packages
    into SA
  • Are you running any FANPARKS?

15
Threats
  • Dont be scared to work with each other-theres
    business for everyone out there
  • Dont feel that the rug is being pulled out under
from you-speak to your counterparts in the rest
    of the country
  • Dont allow yourself to be seen as a boring
    industrialised city where nothing happens

16
  • MAKE ZULULAND
  • EXCITING WELCOMING
