9The Criteria for FCS(www.dmu.dk)
Danish Approach on FCS
10Selection of criteria for defining FCS shall be
Danish Approach on FCS
- capable of providing basis for monitoring FCS
- biological relevant serve as basis for nature
protection (management related) - understandable based on scientific responsible
simplifications - operational in practical management and lay down
starting point for monitoring methods - quantitative
- First define on national level, then on local
site level!
11Selection of indicators to the Criteria for FCS
Danish Approach on FCS
- For each habitat type species, a set of
indicators shall be developed which together is
regarded as sufficient for an evaluation of the
conservation status - Each indicator shall specify
- the characteristics they describe
- the mesurable parametres which are used
- the thresholds which have to be met for
species/habitat types is regarded as in FCS
12For Habitat Types on National Level
Danish Approach on FCS
- Same criteria on national level for all habitat
types - a) area distribution (size/no - stabil or
increasing) - b) structure function (FCS on 70-75 of sites)
- c) characteristic species (distribution area not
decreasing, stabil or increasing occurance) - Same indicators on national level for all habitat
types - Evaluation of FCS is done for each habitat
type/species on national level by the total area
with FCS compared to total distribution area. - Categories of conservation status 1) favourable,
2) unfavourable, or 3) destroyed
13Nationallevel

14Monitoring and reporting
Danish Approach on FCS
- When the Natura 2000 sites are designated, it is
a national responsibility - to maintain/achieve FCS on national level
- to report FCS for habitat types and species to
the EU every 6 years - The monitoring system needs to
- monitor conservation status of the habitats and
species for which a N2K site has been designated! - evaluate each habitat types/species on national
level as favourable, unfaurable or destroyed - In case of large N2K site and if considered
necessary - to develop and implement a site management plan
15The Danish Monitoring Programme - NOVANA
Danish Approach on FCS
- Until 2005
- no national monitoring of terrestrial habitats
and species - long-term monitoring of fresh and marine
waters, but not focus on habitat - types)
- From 2005
- New national monitoring programme to meet
requirements of - WFD and N2K
- Sub programmes relevant for N2K
- Monitoring of 18 (14) terrestrial habitat types
150 species - Monitoring of freshwater water courses
- Monitoring of lakes
- Monitoring of marine and coastal water
