Title: Integrated Post Harvest Management IPHM

1
  • Integrated Post Harvest Management (IPHM)
  • Prof. Susanta K. Roy
  • Chief Consultant, National Horticulture Mission
  • The production of fruits and vegetables will have
significance only when they reach the consumer in
good condition and at a reasonable price.
  • At present there is a considerable gap between
the gross production and net availability of
fruits vegetables due to heavy post harvest
    losses.
  • The success of production lies in loss reduction,
prevention of market gluts, proper distribution
of the produce and its subsequent use by adopting
both traditional and modern post harvest
    technologies
  • 100 utilization of the production in one form or
the other should be the motto.
  • This can only be achieved by adopting Integrated
    Post Harvest Management (IPHM).

Importance of Vegetable in Diet
  • Vegetable crops play a significant role in our
    daily diet.
  • Most vegetables and root crops are rich in
    minerals, carotene (Pro-vitamin A) and vitamin C.
  • Vegetables source of trace elements viz. like
copper, manganese and zinc, which act as enzyme
    cofactor.
  • Vegetables provide dietary fibre, essential for
bowel movement and prevention of several
    diseases.
  • Amount of nutrient vary with vegetables, cultural
    practices, stage of maturity, post-harvest
    handling, packaging, storage and processing.
  • Once harvested, composition of vegetables changes
as a result of physiological and biochemical
    activities

CONCLUSIONS
  • If timely action not taken - post harvest loss
will increase with increase in production.
  • Inappropriate to set a target for higher
production without setting a target for loss
    reduction.
  • NHM working out economically viable time bound
programme in States except North East, JK, HP
    and Uttranchal
  • Adopting both traditional and modern PHT
  • To obtain 100 utilization of production
Integrated Post Harvest Management (IPHM) is
    essential.
  • We can achieve poverty alleviation, employment
    generation, environment protection and economic
    transformation of rural India.
