1
Javier Orellana EGEE-JRA4 Coordinator
Transatlantic Performance Monitoring Workshop
CERN 17 March 2004
EGEE and Network Performance Monitoring
EGEE is proposed as a project funded by
the European Union under contract IST-2003-508833
2
Outline
  • EGEE brief description
  • Network Resource Provision (SA2)
  • Network Services Development (JRA4)
  • JRA4 Network Performance Monitoring

3
EGEE Activity Areas
  • Services
  • Deliver production level grid services
    (manageable, robust, resilient to failure)
  • Middleware
  • Grid middleware re-engineering activity in
    support of the production services
  • Networking
  • Proactively market Grid services to new research
    communities in academia and industry
  • Provide necessary education

4
EGEE Activities
Equivalent EDG Work Packages / Groups WP6 WP7 WP

  • EGEE includes 11 activities
  • Services
  • SA1 Grid Operations, Support and Management
  • SA2 Network Resource Provision
  • Middleware (Joint Research)
  • JRA1 Middleware Engineering and Integration
  • JRA2 Quality Assurance
  • JRA3 Security

Network Resource Provision (SA2) Tasks
  • Tasks
  • Definition of requirements
  • Specification of services
  • Definition of network access policies
  • Monitoring of service level provision
  • and, modelling interaction between

6
Network Service Development (JRA4) Tasks and
Context
  • Main tasks
  • Bandwidth Allocation and Reservation
  • Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostic
    tools
  • and, also IPv6 uptake
  • DANTE already deploying basic infrastructure in
GEANT (current GN1 and the coming GN2 projects)
  • Introduction of Layer 3 differentiated services
    (Premium, BE, LBE)
  • Instrumentation for network measurement

EGEE
  • JRA4 Partners
  • UCL
  • CNRS / UREC
  • DANTE
  • DFN
  • GARR

7
JRA4 Network Performance Monitoring
  • Grid Performance closely linked to Network
    Performance
  • Network Performance?, what for?
  • Problem diagnostic and rectification
  • Facilitate resources allocation
  • Performance monitoring and SLA adherence

8
Net. Perf. Monitoring Use case example
ie. OWD from point A to B ?
We got that already
We DONT yet
NREN A
NREN B
GEANT
OWDOWD1OWD2OWD3
  • PMSx and DMx
  • Are independent implementation for the
    measurements
  • Features
  • Multiple domains, AAA, OGSA/OGSI

Net. Perf. Monitoring Use case example

GEANT

OWDOWD_A-B
  • PMSx and DMx
  • Are independent implementation for measurement
  • Features
  • Multiple domains, AAA, OGSA/OGSI

10
EGEE Focus on the Interfaces
NREN A
NREN B
GEANT
  • Consumer - DM
  • Consumers such as end-user, operations,
    middleware
  • DM - DM
  • Supporting the multi domain signalling and other
    services like topology discovery
  • DM - PSM
  • Control of the end monitoring resources

11
Some EGEE Requirements
  • Continuous monitoring of the service-level
provision (ie, bandwidth available) in the Grid
  • Continuous monitoring of the SLAs adherence
    specified by the partners
  • Performance evaluation and validation of new
    sites joining the Grid
  • Able to Authorise and Authenticate users of the
    service
  • Need of user Accounting to monitor the usage of
    network resources vs SLA
  • Able to handle requests from VO, not just a
    single user
  • Interface to middleware
  • Monitoring of different priority levels or class
    of services
  • Able to customise the service presentation to
different users role such as operations, end
    users, etc..
  • Able to generate a diagnostic response (and
rectification suggestion) when a problem occurs
  • Follow OGSA/OGSI (or WS-RF) standards for the
    interfaces
  • Aggregation modelling tool

Deliverables and Milestones for Network
Performance Monitoring
