UNISON and unions' wider role

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS LESSON
  • Understand why employers and employees need to
agree on what is fair in the workplace.
  • Explain the role of unions in both protecting and
representing workers at both local and national
    level.
  • Give examples of cases where UNISON has been
    successful on behalf of workers.

3
INTRODUCTION
  • Unions have a key role in making sure that
employers and employees are fair to each other.
  • If these two groups don't play fair, it can lead
    to big problems for businesses.
  • For instance, if an employer will not pay fair
rates this leads to workers with low morale.
These are likely to produce poor output.
  • When unions and employers cannot agree, workers
may then turn to industrial action. This is a
last resort. UNISON works to prevent such action
    such as strikes.

4
AIMS
  • UNISON works with both employers and employees to
ensure that public service workers receive a fair
    deal.
  • A big advantage for any worker represented by
UNISON is that, like many other unions, it takes
    part in 'collective bargaining'.
  • This means that when negotiating with a
management group the union represents the whole
workforce. This gives workers far greater
    negotiating strength.
