The Commons
  • An Organizational Model for a Consulting
    Implementation Firm

Introduction
We are inspired to realize the potential of the
individuals, companies communities who
presented and attended the PlaNetwork conference
to work together, both professionally and as
activists. This potential is also present in
the Chaordic Commons and other networks we have
yet to discover. Together, we have collective
knowledge and expertise that is equivalent to a
major international consulting firm - one
dedicated to sustainability and social justice.
4
Solutions to the Global Crisis
During the June 2003 PlaNetwork conference,
Hardin Tibbs made it clear that humanity faces an
imminent global crisis of climate and food
supply, for which the solutions are known and
available - in our community.   The solutions we
collectively represent are capable of turning the
crisis around, and creating the stable,
sustainable prosperity that Hardin called on us
to achieve. Imagine forming a consulting and
implementation firm focused on strategic
initiatives, chosen to catalyze maximum global
and regional movement toward both sustainability,
and removing the fuel for conflicts.
5
Time to Put the Puzzle Together
PlaNetwork gathered about 600 of the people who
are working to achieve that for a major
conference in June, including 90 presenters.
The presenters, staff and audience included
experts in all aspects of sustainability and
technology, economics and politics, and change
within the individual, in small groups, and in
large organizations. We have been organizing on
an ad hoc, relatively fragmented basis. It may be
worthwhile to take a leaf from the book of the
corporate world but our way!
6
oneVillage Foundation and communities in the
third world co-designed a framework for assisting
them in creating sustainable economies from the
soil up, with support from people around the
world who feel a connection with them and want to
be involved. The framework supports these
communities in drawing on the knowledge of the
many groups who have developed solutions in their
areas of expertise, to assemble them into whole
system solutions!The Commons we propose
provides a platform for assembling these whole
system solutions, and marketing them to funders
NGOs.

The Commons
Our movement is social and ethical as well as
technological. There is a strong emphasis on
egalitarianism and flat organizational
structures, yet many of the players are highly
distinguished. These concerns suggest creating
a flexible, non-hierarchical structure such as a
Network or Commons, led by a Council. The Council
handles governance and key services, including
organizational development and capacity building.
