Title: Maslows pyramid of needs and Hertzbergs theory of motivation

1
Maslows pyramid of needs - and Hertzbergs
theory of motivation
  • The American psychologists Abraham Maslow and
Frederic Hertzberg developed their theories about
    1950.
  •
  • Maslows theory concerns our human needs, while
Hertzbergs theory deals with our motivation to
work including the needs that must be satisfied
in order to be able/motivated to learn.
  • Maslows pyramid of needs illustrates that the
needs are systematised in a hierarchy, where the
physiological needs are the most important to
satisfy - if they are not satisfied, they will
    dominate our mind and behaviour.
  •
  • When the physiological needs are satisfied, the
next needs in the pyramid will be of interest and
    so on.
  •
  • This means that at least the three lowest needs
must be satisfied in order to motivate people to
    learn.
  •
  • Hertzbergs theory is structured in the same way
the three lowest needs in the pyramid (called the
factors of maintenance) must be satisfied before
people are able to work with the two upper needs
(called the factors of motivation), where the
acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes is
    situated.
