Placement
  • Use the 4 to 1 ratio
  • Inspect prior to use
  • Place on level surfaces
  • Secure in place
  • Ensure fully opened
  • Look for warning labels
  • Ensure area around ladder is free from additional
    hazards
  • Do not use a ladder in place of scaffolding

Use
  • Always face the ladder when ascending or
    descending
  • Use both hands going up/down
  • Carry tools on a toolbelt
  • Never stand on top 2 rungs
  • Never sit on top of a stepladder
  • Move the ladder to avoid over-reaching
  • Check shoes to insure they are free of mud and
    grease

Ladder Maintenance
  • All repairs shall be done professionally
  • Inspections shall be conducted before each use
  • Defective, broken or damaged ladders shall be
    pulled from service and tagged Dangerous. Do
    Not Use.
  • The joints between the steps and siderails shall
    be tight
  • All moving parts shall operate freely without
    binding
  • All pulleys, wheels and bearings shall be
    lubricated frequently
  • Rungs shall be kept free of grease and oil
  • Rope that is badly worn or frayed shall be
    replaced immediately
  • All ladders shall be equipped with slip resistant
    feet, free of grease and in good condition

Portable Wood Ladders
  • All wood ladders shall be free of splinters,
    sharp edges, shake, wane, compression failures,
    decay and other irregularities
  • Step ladders shall have a metal spreader or
    locking device of sufficient strength and size to
    hold the front and back when open
  • Wood ladders shall not be painted except for
    identification marking

Portable Metal Ladders
  • Inspect ladders immediately when dropped or
    tipped over
  • Metal ladders shall not be used for electrical
    work nor in areas where they could contact
    energized wiring, circuits or equipment
