Introduction to Oxford Scholarship Online
  • OSO has been designed to aid research and
    teaching by
  • providing full online access to a core of some of
    the most
  • important books in the humanities and social
    sciences
  • OSO is launching in Autumn 2003 with 750 books in
    four
  • disciplines

Key features
  • 750 key scholarly books selected from OUPs
    extensive backlist in Philosophy, Religion,
    Political Science, and Economics and Finance (see
    website below for full title listing)
  • 200 new books added from frontlist each year
  • Full text of all books fully searchable within
    each title and across all titles and subjects
  • Search and discovery aids for key content,
    including abstracts and keywords for each book
    and each chapter

  • OSO books can be found in a number of ways within
    the
  • OSO site
  • Search by discipline and sub-discipline for a
    list of
  • books
  • Search by title
  • Search by author
  • Search by keyword or abstract

  • A key feature of OSO is the ability to move from

  • references to other online resources - for

  • journals or online reference works
  • Live links from footnotes and bibliographies will
    connect
  • the user to cited works that are available
    online.

  • both from the OSO public site and from online
    journals

Using OSO for research
  • OSO will aid scholarly research by providing

  • access to key works of scholarship
  • Abstracts and keywords will ensure that results

  • searching are relevant and precise
  • Following links from OSO to other online
  • material will make research easier and quicker
  • Scholars needs - such as accurate citations for
    online
  • material - are provided for
  • provided the user has a subscription

Using OSO for teaching
  • OSO will be available to subscribing institutions
    on a
  • multi-user, institution-wide basis, with access
    enabled
  • for remote users
  • Lecturers will be able to provide links to OSO
    books and
  • chapters in their online reading lists and course
    material
  • that all students can use

  • It will be more convenient for students to read
  • recommended monographs and chapters when they
  • are available online
  • There will be open access to books which had
    previously
  • been available only through the library
