  • Consists of three speeches given by Moses to
    Israel
  • Speech 1 (11 - 443)
  • Speech 2 (444 - 2619)
  • Speech 3 (271 - 3412)

Moses Speeches
  • As the book of Deuteronomy opens, it is the 1st
    day of the 11th month of the 40th year since the
    Israelites left Egypt and they are camped in the
    plains of Moab
  • Before his death, Moses delivered this series of
    speeches encouraging warning his people to
    remain faithful

  • Remember, the old generation who rebelled at
    Kadesh-barnea is dead at this point
  • Although this is a new generation, there would
    have been many who were old enough to remember
    their slavery, the plagues, and all of the great
    events of the last 40 years

  • Moses reminded the people that God had spoken to
    them at Horeb (Sinai)
  • God told them to go and take the land that He had
    promised to their fathers

  • He reminded them of Israels sin at Kadesh-barnea
  • The people requested spies be sent
  • These spies brought back a mixed report - 10
    unfavorable, 2 favorable
  • The people sided with the 10

    rebellion
  • The men of Israel who went on and attempted to
    take the land were defeated
  • The people were made to wander in the wilderness
    for 40 years
  • All of the men of war died in that wilderness
    except for Joshua Caleb

  • Moses explained that God had not allowed them to
    take the land of
  • Edomites (descendants of Esau)
  • Moabites (descendants of Lot)
  • Ammonites (descendants of Lot)
  • God had given these people their land and they
    had overcome giants to gain it

  • Moses reminded them that God had already
    delivered two Amorite Kings into their hands
  • King Sihon and King Og
  • King Og himself was a giant (Deut. 311)
  • His bed was 13 ½ long 6 wide
  • Their land was divided between the tribes of
    Reuben, Gad, ½ of Manasseh

  • The spies had been afraid of giants and fortified
    cities
  • God had given a land of giants to
  • Edom
  • Moab
  • Ammon
  • God had helped Israel take fortified cities -
    even from a giant
  • The message was Do not fear

Deuteronomy 47-9
"For what great nation is there that has God
so near to it, as the LORD our God is to us, for
whatever reason we may call upon Him? And what
great nation is there that has such statutes and
righteous judgments as are in all this law which
I set before you this day? Only take heed to
yourself, and diligently keep yourself, lest you
forget the things your eyes have seen, and lest
they depart from your heart all the days of your
life. And teach them to your children and your
grandchildren,

    allowed to enter the land
  • Then I pleaded with the LORDlet me cross over
    and see the good land beyond the JordanBut the
    LORD was angry with me on your account, and would
    not listen to me. So the LORD said to me 'Enough
    of that! Speak no more to Me of this matter.
    (Deut. 323-26)

  • He warned them about idolatry

Deuteronomy 439-40
Therefore know this day, and consider it in your
heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven
above and on the earth beneath there is no
other. You shall therefore keep His statutes and
His commandments which I command you today, that
it may go well with you and with your children
after you, and that you may prolong your days in
the land which the LORD your God is giving you
for all time."

  • Moses reminded Israel of the covenant God made
    with them at Mt. Sinai
  • He reminded them how God spoke to them and how
    they feared His voice
  • He reviewed the 10 commandments

Deuteronomy 610-13
when the LORD your God brings you into the
land of which He swore to your fathers, to give
you large and beautiful cities which you did not
build, houses full of all good things, which you
did not fill, hewn- out wells which you did not
dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not
plant - when you have eaten and are full - then
beware, lest you forget the LORD who brought
you out of the land of Egypt

  • Moses told Israel not to tempt God as they had in
    Massah (Meribah)
  • The people complained saying Give us water to
    drink (Ex 172)
  • They tempted the LORD saying Is the LORD among
    us or not (EX 177)

Note There is another location called Meribah
where Israel contended with God over water (Num.
202-13)

  • Moses reminded Israel that they were a holy
    nation chosen by God
  • He warned them not to intermingle with the
    Canaanites
  • They were to destroy all idols altars
  • They were to make no covenants with them and show
    no mercy to them
  • They were to make no marriages with them

  • Moses told them of the blessings of obedience
  • God would keep His covenant with them
  • He would bless multiply them
  • He would bless their children, land, grain,
    livestock
  • He would take away sickness
  • He would deliver the people of the land into
    their hands to be destroyed

  • Moses pleaded with them to remember God when He
    blessed them
  • (811) Beware that you do not forget the LORD
    your God by not keeping his commandments
  • (818) remember the LORD your God, for it is He
    who gives you power to get wealth

Deuteronomy 819-20
Then it shall be, if you by any means forget the
LORD your God, and follow other gods, and serve
them and worship them, I testify against you
this day that you shall surely perish. As the
nations which the LORD destroys before you, so
you shall perish, because you would not be
obedient to the voice of the LORD your God.

"This day the LORD your God commands you to
observe these statutes and judgments therefore
you shall be careful to observe them with all
your heart and with all your soulAlso today the
LORD has proclaimed you to be His special people,
just as He promised youthat He will set you high
above all nations which He has made, in praise,
in name, and in honor, and that you may be a holy
people to the LORD your God, just as He has
spoken."
