BACKGROUND
  • Mooted by NITC in 1998 with initial RM50 million
    allocation (RMK-7)
  • Entrusted with additional RM100 million (RMK-8)
  • Key initiative program to realise National IT
    Agendas objectives.
  • DAs focus projects using ICT applications that
    creates value to community development
  • Pilot project/model (small, focused and quick
    realisation)with the intent of replication,
    up-scaling or commercialisation as well as
    sustainability

  • ObjectiveIntroduced visual based application
    through ICT and the Internet as an excellent
    platform for their voice to be heard.
  • ApproachTeach deaf students guided by deaf
    instructors by introducing it to 6 special
    schools for the deaf.
  • Community 3 NGOs 6 Deaf Schools of about 1,700
    population out of 18,000 deaf people in Malaysia.
  • Awards/recognition received the United Nations
    Award for
  • bridging the digital divide among the deaf.

  • Objective To define the extent to which
    contemporary ICTs could deliver sustainable human
    development to remote rural communities in
    Sarawak.
  • Approach Computers are introduced
    systematically beginning with the school. Two
    computer labs at the schools and a community
    telecentre have been established in the area
    using VSAT network.
  • Community A population of almost 1,000
    people.Consisting of the 12 communities that can
    be found within a 3 1/2 mile radius of Bario
    Asal.

    and Nurturing d) Y2Care - Young To Care
  • Community 26 homes with about 640 children and
    Home administrators.
  • Awards/recognition adopted by the Microsoft
    Foundation

    research among members of Biodiversity community
    in the ASEAN region.
  • Approach Engagement of University Malaysia
    Sarawak(UNIMAS) as the centre of research content
    and affiliations with other research centres in
    ASEAN.

  • Awards/Recognition South East Asia only virtual
    museum of natural history and affiliated to
    major museums of natural history in Europe and
    the US as well as on-line journal consortium of
    Swets-Blackwell.
