  • Mentor is derived from the Greek language and
    mythology. Odyssey was a mentor to Ulysses.
    Mentor means a wise and trusted teacher or
    counselor.
  • The goal of mentoring is to assist others to
    mature, both personally and professionally

Four Common Characteristics in Mentorships
  • Mentees address concerns about careers, self,
    etc. in an effort to gain knowledge from the
    mentor.
  • Both participants benefit from the exchange of
    information as they respond to needs and concerns
  • The relationships occur within an organizational
    context which structures how they occur
  • It is an individual relationship formed in
    agreement between the mentor and mentee

Four Phases of Mentoring
  • Initiation 6 months-1 year
  • Commitment to mentoring develops
  • Cultivation 2-5 years
  • Career development begins first and then
    counseling and friendship
  • Separation 6 months to 2 years
  • May result from PCS or simply outgrowing the
    mentoring relationship
  • Redefinition Indefinite
  • The relationship either ends or develops into
    a peer relationship due to personal growth
