Twin Themes of Hebrews

• Superior Jesus Christ is superior to all the
  institutions of Judaism.
• Persevere Because of the superiority of Jesus,
  we must persevere in faithfulness to Him.

Hebrews Information, and Warnings

• Jesus is Superior to the Prophets and Angels
  11-14.
• So pay attention, and dont drift! 21-3.
• Jesus is Superior to the Angels and Moses
  25-36.
• So dont have a sinful, unbelieving heart!
  37-413.

• Jesus is a Superior High Priest 414-514.
• So leave behind the elementary teachings about
  Christ, and go on to maturity 61-12.
• Jesus is a Superior High Priest, like
  Melchizedek, and Superior to Aaron 613-1018.
• So let us persevere in our new found, commonly
  held faith 1019-39.

Hebrews 1214-17

• 14 Make every effort to live in peace with all
  men and to be holy without holiness no one will
  see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one misses the
  grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to
  cause trouble and defile many.

• 16 See that no one is sexually immoral, or is
  godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his
  inheritance rights as the oldest son. 17
  Afterward, as you know, when he wanted to inherit
  this blessing, he was rejected. He could bring
  about no change of mind, though he sought the
  blessing with tears.

• Make every effort to live at peace with others
  1214a.
• Make every effort to be holy 1214b.
• Both of these are commands, which are directed to
  the community, not just to individuals.

• Two Extremes
• We can live at peace with one another, and never
  confront the issue of our personal and corporate
  holiness.
• We can be so obessessed with holiness that we
  lose all sense of community.

• Holiness is indispensable to the life of the
  believing community 1214c.
• What happens if we do not live peaceably, and in
  holiness, with one another.
• We miss the grace of God.
• We allow bitterness to grow, which causes trouble
  and defiles others.
