Title: CARL JUNG

1
CARL JUNG
  • Born in 1875 in Kessewil, Switzerland
  • Father was a pastor, studied
  • Latin at 6, also studied
  • ancient languages
  • including Sanskrit (Hindu)
  • Studied mystical traditions-
  • Alchemy, Kabala, and
  • Buddhism
  • Had a capacity for lucid
  • dreaming and occasional
  • visions

2
In 1913 he had a vision of a monstrous flood
engulfing most of Europe and touching the
mountains of Switzerland
  • Then the water turned into blood and he saw
    thousands dying and civilizations being
    destroyed.

3
In the next few weeks he had dreams of eternal
winters
  • And rivers of blood.

4
August 1 of that year World War One began.
5
Telliard De Chardin a Jesuit Priest from the same
period wrote,we are not a human being trying to
attain a spiritual experience, but, rather, we
are spiritual beings having a human experience.
  • Jung felt there had been a connection between
himself and humanity and perhaps each individual
is somehow connected to a whole.
  • His was a more spiritual perspective

6
Carl Jung would eventually label this
spiritual connection as our
COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS
7
COLLECTIVE UNCONSCIOUS
8
Mr. Rowland H.
client of Carl Jung
Hopeless for a medical or psychiatric solution
On rare occasions some have experienced a
spiritual or religious experience
Involved with group that emphasized meditation
and prayer
Rowland carried his message to Americato another
alcoholic.
9
Ruined Wall Street career
In state of constant drunkeness
Institutionalized for third time.
Bill Wilson
Introduced to idea of a spiritual cure by former
drinking buddy.
"If there be a God, will He show Himself."
Experienced a great illumination
10
Jung recorded his dreams and visions and he found
his experiences tended to form into archetypes
Another was the shadow figure
  • One was an wise old man, a spiritual guru

Still another is the mother archetype
11
There are many of these archetypes
  • One
  • is
  • the
  • H
  • E
  • R
  • O

12
Another is
The Trickster
13
According to Jung collective unconscious is your
psychic inheritance. All the memories of the
entire human species is ours yet we can never be
directly conscious of it.Examples would be
  • The experience of love at first sight.

Déjà vu
The immediate recognition of certain symbols
and Near Death Experiences
14
Examples of Precognitive Dreams
'I had a recurring dream every night for a week.
In the dream my mother, who was dead in reality,
paid a visit and told me. 'You will not see Doug
and Joy again. They will not be here long'. Doug
and Joy were my brother and his wife.
The dream was very disquieting and I wanted to
warn my brother but my husband told me not to be
so 'silly'.
Two days after the last dream I bought the local
paper and on the front page were my brother and
Joy. They had been killed flying to Spain. I had
no idea they had gone on holiday.'
15
Another example of a precognitive dream
'I was 20 years old and had just begun a new job
as an assistant librarian in Newcastle. I dreamed
that a Dutchman came into the library to ask
about some Dutch language novels. In the dream I
went to the file where such requests were kept
and could not find it, but eventually tracked it
down to the back room where another assistant was
dealing with it.
The next day it did happen. The Dutchman came in
about his request for Dutch novels. Instead of
searching the file I went straight to my friend
in the back room who was indeed working on that
request then.'
16
One morning, in a dream he heard a classical
string ensemble playing, and, as (Paul )McCartney
tells it
"I woke up with a lovely tune in my head. I
thought, 'That's great, I wonder what that is?'
There was an upright piano next to me, to the
right of the bed by the window. I got out of bed,
sat at the piano, found G, found F sharp minor
7th -- and that leads you through then to B to E
minor, and finally back to E. It all leads
forward logically.
I liked the melody a lot, but because I'd dreamed
it, I couldn't believe I'd written it. I thought,
'No, I've never written anything like this
before.' But I had the tune, which was the most
magic thing!"
17
Madame C.J. Walker (1867-1919) is cited by the
Guinness Book of Records as the first female
American self-made millionaire.
Walker was suffering from a scalp infection that
caused her to loose most of her hair in the
1890s
He answered my prayer, for one night I had a
dream, and in that dream a big, black man
appeared to me and told me what to mix up in my
hair
Some of the remedy was grown in Africa, but I
sent for it, mixed it, put it on my scalp, and in
a few weeks my hair was coming in faster than it
had ever fallen out. I tried it on my friends it
helped them. I made up my mind to begin to sell
it.
18
Psychologist Sandra Ingerman
For years suffered painful problems the medical
specialists declared untreatable.
For months Ingerman prayed every night for help
to come to her in a dream.
Nothing happened for monthsthen one night.in a
dream
19
A young handsome Native American appeared to her
he held a rattle of a extraordinary translucent
blue skin which he rattled over the area in which
she was in pain.
At that moment she felt the pain leave her body
and knew even while dreaming that she had
experienced a cure.
When she awakened the pain was gone.
20
Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz
"I fell into a reverie, and lo, the atoms were
gamboling before my eyes! Whenever, hitherto,
these diminutive beings had appeared to me, they
had always been in motion but up to that time, I
had never been able to discern the nature of
their motion.
Now, however, I saw how, frequently, two smaller
atoms united to form a pair how a larger one
embraced the two smaller ones how still larger
ones kept hold of three or even four of the
smaller whilst the whole kept whirling in a
giddy dance.
I spent part of the night in putting on paper at
least sketches of these dream forms. This was the
origin of the Structural Theory."
21
Jack Nicklaus Finds a New Golf Swing in a Dream
"Wednesday night I had a dream and it was about
my golf swing.
I've been having trouble collapsing my right arm
taking the club head away from the ball, but I
was doing it perfectly in my sleep.
I was hitting them pretty good in the dream and
all at once I realized I wasn't holding the club
the way I've actually been holding it lately.
So when I came to the course yesterday morning I
tried it the way I did in my dream and it worked.
22
HOW could this happen??
23
It is believed that Jung used the Hindu view of
reality to explain the collective unconscious
