The porosity of soil at Lake Munson moving away
from the shoreline.
  • Research Question Will the Porosity (percent) of
    the soil decrease as we move further away from
    Lake Munson?
  • Hypothesis We predict that the Porosity of the
    soil will decrease as we take samples further
    away from Lake Munson because porosity measures
    the amount pore space of the soil and it makes
    sense that as we get further from the lake the
    soil will become sandier and less porous.

Procedure
  • 1. Performed Bulk Density Protocol according to
    the Globe Program.
  • 2. At Lake Munson we made our intervals two
    meters apart, at each interval we collected three
    samples there were three intervals.
  • 3. We used 275mL plastic containers to collect
    the samples.
  • 4. Performed Soil Particle Density Protocol
    according to the Globe Program.
  • 5. This procedure was carried out in a lab.
  • 6. We made our calculations, and completed the
    data sheet.

What is porosity?
  • Bulk Density A measure of how dense and tightly
    packed a sample of soil is.
  • Soil Particle Density Measures the mass of a
    soil sample in a given volume of particles
    focuses on just the soil particles and not the
    total volume that the soil particles and pore
    spaces occupy in the soil.

Data and Observations
  • Debris in the soil made the lab tests more
    difficult.
  • The soil closer toward the lake was much darker
    and moister.
  • After the 24 hour waiting period, some soil
    samples were nearly dry while others had to be
    dried in the drying oven.

  • (Particle Density) X 100
  • Bulk Density mass of dry soil / total volume of
    soil and air (g/cm3)
  • Particle Density mass of dry soil / volume of
    soil particles only (air removed) (g/cm3)

Conclusion
  • We did find that soil porosity decreased with
    increasing distance from Lake Munsons shore.
